Interesting seeing the different ordering experiences here. I ordered my MY on 9/9, got a confirmation text the same day, as well as an email from my SA. Had trouble adding a referral code when I ordered so replied to the SA requesting help with that. He replied a couple days later and said he'd entered it. On 9/17 I got the "we expect your Model Y to be ready for delivery 7 - 13 days from today" message. No VIN yet and my "next steps" status is to enter my insurance info. Not adding this to my policy until I get a VIN. That's it so far. I will say that this is one of the more interesting car buying experiences I've had. But to be fair, this is also a car unlike any other, so I kind of expect a weird user experience. I reckon Tesla will gradually get this all worked out.

For the insurance (if you live in these 12 states), you can just upload the insurance info for your current car without having to add the Tesla to your policy. I think if you delay updating the insurance information to your account then it may delay your movement in the queue.

My SA said that uploading insurance does not prevent you from getting matched with a car. I also still haven't uploaded insurance proof and I'm taking delivery on Wednesday. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

oh thats good! My SA said it would

In some states it will, but not WA. They must have been confused. I didn't even get insurance on my Model 3 for several days when I got it last year. You get a certain amount of time to get insurance on your new car (depending on your insurance and lender), during that time your current auto policy will cover your new car.

"However, the truth is that state auto insurance rules don't grant any grace period by law, but most insurance companies (e.g. State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Mercury, AAA, etc.) do give drivers buying a new car 30 days to get their vehicle registered and insured."

Hope that helps!

Oh, yeah, I know that there is a grace period with adding a car to an insurance policy after you obtain the car. I was referring to one of the steps to purchasing where it says "Proof of insurance is required to take delivery." and then tells you to upload insurance information. I didnt add my MY to my insurance policy yet, I just uploaded my current policy info to my Tesla account. Apparently other states require you to insure your Tesla before you take physical ownership, but there are 12 states (listed in the picture I posted) that you can just use your current insurance information until you have your new car and then utilize that grace period.

My SA basically told me to complete all steps or I'd keep getting kicked to the end of the line so I've just been trying to keep my place in line :-D Obviously based on the response above, uploading insurance information is not affecting my place in line.

We had our SA change to dealership delivery. Reasons:
  • For where we live in the city, it'd be a bad experience to try and inspect the car. I don't want to feel uncomfortable/rushed while inspecting the car!
  • By being at the service center, I'm hoping it'll be easier to address or get assurances about issues before signing any paperwork.
  • I want to experience a "drive home". :)
If you choose to switch, make sure to keep an eye on the schedule page. We switched, and two times the system changed us back to home delivery and chose a time for us. I'm guessing this happened because although our SA switched us to dealership delivery, the schedule page never offered us appointments (reason unknown). Thus, at the end of each day the system decided it needed to force a home delivery appointment on us.

Anyways, after the second switch back, our SA simply asked us when we wanted to come by, and they force set an appointment that we now see on our manage order page. So far the appointment has stuck. We're going to still check that page at least once a day though to make sure the system doesn't try to mess things up again.

thanks for the info. Makes sense. Ours is going to be Tesla direct where a delivery specialist will be driving the car and dropping it at our home. And we can inspect and work with specialist on any concerns.

We have a really good SA who has been super responsive and our overall experience with Tesla has been nothing short of awesome. Hoping to not jinx that during delivery

I hope yours, and other Seattle area deliveries, have great timing. The Seattle 7 day forecast has me a bit concerned. As far as I know, the delivery centers don't have indoor space either so perhaps no matter what you are likely to be out in the rain. At least we will know how they look in their "native habitat".

Mine arrived in Renton yesterday and I'm scheduled to pick up on Wednesday, so I drove by the lot yesterday evening since I was in the area. I didn't even bother trying to spot mine because the lots were so full

Called again (I wonder how much the advisors hate me lol) and it appears my car is in preproduction, has been assigned a vin and should be built on the 24th. Really hard watching people with the same build, who ordered long after me, get their cars first. Must remain calm :p

We’ve got this—at least that’s what I keep telling myself!! No vin or update yet

The odds are in our favor to get cars by the end of the month... honestly my real concern is getting a rushed job. It’s hard to wait especially when I know there is a chance I may have to reject it. Fingers crossed for all us PNW folks!
Totally agree. We also have two kiddos who are running in opposite directions and I’m in medical sales for work so my car is my office—I sold that car 2 weeks ago based upon a soft match date of 9/7 thinking it wouldn’t be a big deal to be down to one car for a couple of days if the delivery date pushed. Now that we’re on day 16 and I’m seeing similar configs that were ordered after me I’m starting to loose patience. I just hope the car that does arrive doesn’t have any QC issues due to the EOQ push.

Very similar situation, we sold our car at the beginning of this month thinking the original estimate 4-6 weeks would be just about perfect. I hope our cars arrive soon and are in decent shape (I don't mind minor stuff, our 3 had lots of little things that had to be fixed).

On the bright side, looks like rain for the next 2 weeks so they should at least know if the Ys on the lot are leaking :p

We officially have a vin— 55***. I reached out to me SA for additional clarity/visibility and/or timing and she said “Great! Within the next 8 days. Watch for an automated text message asking you to schedule yourself for delivery.” Such a low level of info and customer service. Can’t wait to move past the sales experience—one step closer.
