What do you do with your house keys (for those that use their phone as a car key)?

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
We had a moment yesterday, where we got home and realised neither of us had a house key on us. 🤦🏻‍♂️

It’s because we normally have a house key on our car keys, but now we‘ve got a Tesla and use the app to lock/unlock, it’s all a new routine.

Im wondering what you do? Do you have a phone case with a key(s) in it, or another solution.

Please share!

Just popping this up.
Anyone with experience fitting a keyless system to a nightlatch?

From their website, they sell an electric release version (although in the notes it says it doesn't comply with the BS3621 standard, if that is what you are concerned about)
Banham EL4000 Electric Release Lock Satin Brass

Maybe you can get that and then find a way to automate the 12V electric release in a secure way? If you are the DIY type and have experience with low voltage systems and microcontrollers, it shouldn't be too difficult to do. But if you expect to buy something that works out of the box then it may be more difficult to try to find a way to make it work without some expertise.

If you are trying to find something that actuates your existing lock (for example the electric release doesn't meet your security requirements), then you probably would need to find an some kind of mechanical actuator you can remote control and then the keyless reader would activate that actuator. But this would be even more involved than using that electric release.

would have been simpler in hindsight to buy the nuki and cylinder separately.. Nuki even sells a universal cylinder that looks like it would have worked - I need approx 45/35 and the supplied one was about 40/35 but far enough off not to work (or be less secure)
How easy or hard to replace the cylinder with the Nuki universal cylinder (I may have to replace the cylinder) - remember my DIY skills are nil to patchy :-(

cylinder was surprisingly easy to replace. open your door and there is a small screw that releases it and you can just pull it out. The main complexity is the ratio of distance between front and back of the door - so that when you put the new one in its the right length and that screw hole lines up again. That was one thing wrong with the Ultion that it ddn't line up.

honestly for your setup it doesn't look like you need to change anything - just remove the thumb turn and use the adapter you can order for free (so it fits on the Nuki. You'll still be able to open from the outside with a key with the Nuki on (because you have a thumb turn thats a guarantee)

Generally you need to have the key inserted and turned slightly. This is to stop randos removing the barrel from any unlocked door I assume. Not sure how that works for a thumb turn
But you are right it is very easy. I am sure there are plenty of You tube videos as well.

I understand, unfortunately wife lost her wallet with the key - so thinking of changing the cylinder too, just a protection.
Take the cylinder out and measure the outside and inside lengths from the retaining screw hole so you know what size you need to replace it with. Euro cylinders are very easy to remove and replace. Youtube will no doubt have gazillions of videos, if needed.

I finally thought rather than entertaining @WannabeOwner I’ll ask a locksmith to do this job instead of me trying my hands and make the door unusable. I got someone locally who claims himself as ‘Ultion Nuki specialist’ and first dismissed the whole idea of Nuki Pro 4 and wants to fit Ultion Nuki. That’s fine with me. But his rate including the product +Vat (445+90) and then installation (95+Vat) looks like he is making around £110 extra from this work other than his installation fees of £95. The product at the moment as a bundle costs £450 (including Vat of 79).

Not sure whether to go ahead with this guy - anyhow see whether I can get some other quotation. Any thoughts welcome.

check a youtube video of how to replace a cylinder. You almost can't go wrong. I was surprised how easy it was. And if you buy the wrong size replacement from amazon you can just put the old one back. Takes 5 mins.

The main thing looking for a replacement is measuring from the screw hole in the side to the front and back and buying a matching one. Eg 100mm thick door, hole is 20mm from the front and 80mm from the back so you'd want an 80:20 cylinder with a thumbturn.

If The Ultion Nuki has the same hole positions as your current handle ( they ask quite a few questions when you order BTW) then fitting it yourself should be trivial. I confess I have not fitted one myself but I have fitted lots of door handles and I have ordered an Ultion Nuki so I have looked at this.
My advice would be order one try to fit it if you have problems get someone in to do it for you at that point any, handyman could do it does not need a specialist or even a locksmith in my opinion.

Two comments:
1. Check that you have the right size for your door - a 40:50 lock for an inside door would be 50:40 if the door opened outward. I made this mistake, although replaced it easily through Amazon.
2. If the cylinder sticks out from the door handle by around 10mm (very common, usually on both sides) be sure to get a shorter replacement that is flush with the door handle. Projecting cylinders can be broken by burglars within seconds - as demonstrated on U-Tube.

If buying a euro cylinder you generally take out the existing one and measure it given how easy it is to do.

Its also a good capability test as well because if you can't do that you probably should get someone in to do the job 🤣

Edit
all you need is the key and a medium Philips head screwdriver (not a Pozidrive) (and if you don't know the difference I refer you to my previous comment)
