What is this high pitched cricket like noise?

I have a 22 MYP and a 23 MYLR. The MYP is near a perfect build with a couple of very minor problems I was able to address myself.

I have the same noise everyone else in this forum is experiencing on the 23 I just picked up two weeks ago. My delivery was a very bad experience for the second car with a slew of issues.

The car is currently at the SC and they claim if it was the drive unit it would be throwing codes. Can someone provide some workorders with their info redacted to provide to the SC. The SA is basically calling me a liar and does not believe any car had a drive unit replaced without throwing codes. Also would anyone mind sharing WHICH SC they had success in getting this fixed. I am very angry with Tesla as the SC just simply does not care about fixing anything not even the other issues with the car.

Who do you escalate stuff to? I mean this company makes great cars but their customer service SUCKS. The SA at this location basically curses me out and this is ok??

If this SC says within spec I will be making a road trip to a different one on vacation to get this resolved by a SC that actually wants to solve problems.

Did you show them the recording?

He said it does not do anything for him and a tech would have to "hear" it in real time.. He is denying the drive unit as he says there are no fault codes. UNREAL.
I am running into the same issue. The SC aren't accepting the videos as proof and they want a tech (most of which have bad hearing because of the jobs they are in) to hear it in person.

Also the techs are saying the car is safe to drive so there aren't any issues. I agree that the car seems safe to drive and that this is only an "annoyance" issue but still, we all paid a lot of money for these cars and we should demand a certain level of quality.

There is no way they can determine with certainty that the car is safe to drive. They're asking for a lawsuit. I'm not an engineer but who knows what a "burnt out bearing" or whatever this is could lead to down the road.

Also there's nothing in the warranty that says "only things that affect safety will be addressed." It's a defect and they need to fix it. They just need 45 techs to hear it in a row before they even consider taking you seriously.

agreed! but the hard part is getting techs the actually hear it and then having them admit that they hear it, THEN admit that its NOT normal......

I think before the drive what u can do is show them what ur sound like so they know what to search for. But I’m having the same issue of reproducing the sound when the car got there. They’re very skeptical about the online findings.

I too have this problem on my 23MY, i took it in and got a new drive unit, still have the same noise at the same speeds as everyone else. Tried to make another appointment and now they want to charge me $140 to diagnose the issue… Sad

I suspect all of us thinking we have the same issue are mistaken and that there are several different problems that can cause similar symptoms. Some people drive unit fixed it, some people obviously other things such as brakes are the issue. Myself I think I hear the same noise as others but perhaps mine has a buffeting type of sound, like wind going through a pinhole. I'm going to tape up all my possible panel gaps and air entry points at front of car. (Going to look like a lunatic driving it) will report back on findings lol

My Tesla makes a ringing noise at this frequency, and I'm pretty sure it's from the front. I have a specialist looking at it tomorrow otherwise it's getting lemon'd.

There agree there might be several different sounds/issues at play. That's why I encourage everyone to record the sound and share it with the group to confirm it's the same sound. At the very least please review my previous posts that have recordings of the sound and recordings of things that are a different sound.

That being said, I'm becoming increasingly convinced that MOST or ALL of the front drive units produced after late 2021 make this noise. It's just that some are quieter (or near silent) vs others. The reason I think this is I have noticed that even when I can't hear the noise with my ears, I can still hear it with the microphone attached to the front drive unit. It's there from 20+ mph under almost all conditions, just at different volumes, sometimes quietly sometimes so loud it's clipping the recording. I would love to try that microphone out on the cars that have had successful replacements.

What's interesting is the only thing that truly makes it shut up is a strong prolonged right turn, like an exit ramp or doing a circle in a large parking lot going 20+ mph. Interestingly a similar left turn has absolutely no effect on the sound--still there. This is leading me to believe that it's a mechanical issue with the front drive unit (bearing or otherwise), not electrical (inverters/harmonics etc). The fact that it quiets on right but not left turns might have to do with how the drive unit experiences different loading forces with right vs left turns. But again suggests a mechanical issue, not electrical. It could also be as simple as the oil in the oil pan is sloshing to one side, covering the noisy part.

With regards to everyone having issues with the SCs, I've had exactly the same experience with some of the techs, it seems to just depend on which one/what mood they're in. A younger guy I got was very helpful and resulted in the unit getting replaced, and the when I went in again when the replacement still had the issue, I got the lead tech, who was unhelpful and rude. Not sure what you can do short of trying a different SC.
