Winter Tires

I would do the same if I knew at the time. TPMS in winter is not very useful and it's a pain to have it reprogrammed when you're not close to a Tesla service center. I don't mind the TPMS error for 4 months.

I agree TPMS can be a pain, but in a car without a spare like the S (and especially in such a heavy vehicle), I'm not sure I would feel comfortable not having them.

My (now phased out) 2 cents...

So if I get my S in the next few weeks, I'll do winters, and I've narrowed my selection down to two tires.

- Nokian Hakka 7 with studs (245/45/19) - $346 each for total of $1384
- Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 (245/45/19) - $252 each for total of $1008

Studs are allowed in Quebec and I'm thinking they might come in handy with a RWD vehicle, but they will likely add rolling resistance/increased battery consumption.

I haven't chosen 19" wheels yet, I'm still kinda baffled on what to do there.

Just wondering what my fellow Quebecers have decided to do.

Hi Zax,

Unfortunately I am in exactly the same boat as you... I was hoping for an april delivery to avoid buying winter tires this year altogether!

I know nothing about studded tires, in fact I always assumed (incorrectly it seems) that they were illegal in Quebec, but I confirmed your findings on the MTQ website. I am sure the Nokians are good, but are they the best for urban winter driving in Montreal, that I have no clue...

I do know that Blizzaks have a good reputation and I believe relatively low rolling resistance.

Any input from our TMC tire gurus (furtively looks towards Jerry33 ).

As for the 19' wheels, I will likely just go with the Tesla's, so as not to have to deal with centering rings, etc...

I seem to have run into a little snag...

My delivery window is March 1-15, and I was only offered a home delivery. The Montreal service center is not yet open, makes sense... However, my car will come with 21' summer tires, and while I do want winter wheels, I do NOT want the Pirelli's in the Tesla bundle.

I asked if I could purchase appropriately sized tires and have them installed (with TPMS) prior to delivery.

I was just told by my DS that Tesla cannot at this time install tires that are not 'approved' by Toronto, but they are very happy to sell me the rims and TPMS.

I have a steep driveway, and do NOT want to drive my brand new car with summer performance tires in winter in Montreal, but am somehow expected to get winter wheels installed... I was essentially told, sorry, can't help you, talk to service management in Toronto. :cursing:

After all the comments about outstanding Tesla customer service and 'bend-over-backwards' attitude, I am not in the least impressed.

I have, however, sent an e-mail to Eli Edwards (whom I do not know but was told is in charge of service) to see if he can help. I hope I don't have to leave my brand new car in the garage for 1-2 months...

The service people are indeed very helpful. Unfortunately, from what I have seen, Tesla prohibits service from installing anything non-stock. (Probably their legal department at work!)

Suggestion: Take the 19" wheels to your shop of choice to get rubber installed. Then when the roads aren't too bad bring the car over to swap. As I understand it there is a grace period for tires on new cars so this is quite legal.

Is there an issue with getting a 3rd party shop to mount the tires and put them on the car using the existing 19" wheels? I have heard of supply issues with the Tesla wheels and was thinking that if the extra wheels aren't available at delivery I could just get the Hakka 7s (non-studded) winter tires put on the wheels delivered with the car afterwards.

If I were getting the car later in March I would just stay on the all seasons and deal with the winter tire and wheel issue later but I doubt I will get that option.

If you really don't want risking driving with summer tires (especially with a new car you don't know well) you can have your car delivered near/at your local tire shop. My aftermarket wheels and tires have been installed by a very specialized local tire shop and no issues at all. As for TPMS programming, you will have to drive with the error which is not a major issue for about a month. That's what I would do.

Studded tires are amazing in snow. However, many interior parking facilities (condos, hotels, offices) are PROHIBITING them. Personally, I had studded on my Audi and I regretted the noise when there wasn't snow on the road - which is quite often! But again, it's always a question of sacrifices... If you only have the S maybe that's a good idea.

A friend of mine in Montreal as a Model S with studded Nokian's. I can ask him about noise, traction if you want.

Salut Jeeps,

I am (supposedly) taking delivery this thursday at the Mtl service center. It might not be ready for general public, but they did do the deliveries there in dec, and the place was still getting worked on last week when I went by. But not much is required, a desk and a car ...

Re tire mounting, I will do the same, and mount winter tires on the 19" that come with the car, so I spotted a couple of places around the service center to have them mounted and come back to have the TPMS resetted. Here are some tire shops close by to the Mtl location :
- Pneus National, Pneu National - Vente de pneus et service, Across the street
- Au Centre du Pneu Groupe Unik, 1080, boul des Laurentides, Laval, QC H7G 2W1, 450-668-2222

That's ridiculous... Are there any tire shops close to the service center in Mississauga? I'd prefer to not have to drive home to Hamilton on summer tires...

I see Tires N' Such is just around the corner. Has anyone dealt with them?

Thanks for all your input gents.

Still waiting on a reply from Eli Edwards / Tesla Canada service, as well as from a tire shop I dealt with a few years back that happens to be relatively close to the future Montreal service center. They are looking into Nokian's availability.

So far, no one from Tesla has proposed a delivery to the service center (the online questionnaire only gave me home delivery as an option), but I am sure that could be arranged if I asked.

I just find it strange that Tesla will not accommodate a customer who asks them to mount his own tires (permission is implicit)...

Let us know the answers, I am also interested in finding a shop close by that has access to Nokians. I already know one closer to my place that said they could get Hakka 7s (non-studded) with 48 hours notice so i have a fallback but if i want to minimize driving without winter tires and get the TPMS reprogrammed it would be simpler to deal with a shop closer to the service center.

I too, at first, was not offered the option for a service centre delivery. I contacted my delivery specialist and they arranged for me to pick up the car in Toronto. They had me fill out the Delivery questionnaire as if I were taking a home delivery, and they modified the order after the fact.

Ask your DS to pick up at a service centre, if that is what you want to do, and the option is not on the website.

Jerry, I've gotten the impression that you favor the Hakka R's. Do you like the Hakka 7's better?

The Hakka 7s are optimized for studs. The Hakka Rs are optimized for studless. I am not a fan of studded tires. Next year I believe Nokian will have a couple of new winter tires out--which isn't going to do you much good this year :)

This is probably because Telsa is a manufacturer. If they put on different tires, then they change the car's specs. Manufacturers are limited in what they can do in this regard.

They arrived late yesterday. Can't wait to have a car to put them on.

mnx,

Those wheels look amazing!

Are they these? Enkei Tuning Raijin-19 Black Painted

Did you order from tirerack? Do the tires come mounted/balanced on the wheels when you order it all together?

Thanks, and I know I've asked some of these questions before, but I'm trying to piece together a potential winter solution -- not easy. :)

Yup, those are the ones.

Yes I ordered from Tirerack. They come balanced/mounted if you order rims+tires.

Good luck!

FWIW, I just got off the phone with Lisa @ the service center in Toronto and they said it was no problem to install my aftermarket tire/wheel combo.

I seem to have run into a little snag...

A bit of good news as follow-up.

I got in touch with Eli, who confirmed that my DS (Alex) could have my tires of choice mounted on 19' Tesla rims (with TPMS) ahead of my car delivery.

He also confirmed that the sumnmer / winter tire swaps would be done as part of the maintenance plan, and that off-season storage (including pictures of the rims and washing prior to mounting) would be offered for $150.

I am still researching tire shops, so far I got a quote for 1,650$ for 4 Hakka 7 (without studs), mounted and balanced. Does that seem to be a fair price for canada?

I decided to go with the Hakka 7's after doing some research, including this article with a clear (but low-res) table: Top-5-winter-tires-for-cars-in-2011 - Auto123

Jeeps,

When talking to Alex, was it clear that you had to buy Tesla rims in order for them to do the mounting/balancing/installation? Did they mention what the rims/TPMS and installation would cost? I'm debating between the Hakka 7 with/without studs or Blizzaks from tirerack and aftermarket rims from there. But then, who would install, I'm not sure, I guess anyone could do it. Is the $150 for storage for all seasons or just one season of storage? I think Acura was charging me only $50 per season for my MDX, so $150 is a bit higher, but not crazy, except that I'm on the shore and would have to go to Laval... argh.

Are you sure you don't want studs? I had them on my TL and they make a difference and they're legal in Quebec... For RWD, I think it would help us, but I'm not 100% sure.

Argh, decisions, decisions!
