$200 tow hitch worth it?

Funny...when I asked how much the tow package was, the DS told me $750...but it is really $3,250 if you don't already have the Air Suspension upgrade which is apparently required with the tow package.

Just checked the Tesla website - The accessory hitch is still there for $200, and the tow package for $750. They're both listed at the same size at 2". The tow package is also supposed to come with the 7 pin electronics harness and software package. Speculation on structural differences aside, those are the only two differences.

Like the spoiler, early adopters may get the full "tow package" if the factory isn't configured to produce Xs without the tow/accessory hitch yet. I would be interested to know whether anyone has an X without a tow package. They may not think to check if they haven't opened up the rear bumper compartment. Can anyone check?

Although I think I may have gotten a full structural tow package, it remains to be seen whether the software portion would be activated for me...

Should be just a quarter or key turn in the plastic latch. Check page 70 of your manual (RTFM! ;):p ).

Cheers!

I did! :) The problem is that it doesn't seem to look like that - it seems to have two pop-in plastic screws or something on either side (closer to the rear end of the car), and I do not see that quarter key turn that is depicted in the manual. That's why I couldn't get it. I'll take a picture of it once I'm back home tonight.

Gotcha. Do the pop-its have a philips head screw driver pattern? If not, a firm tug should pull them off.

Take a video of you squirming on the ground to see the access. That will be more interesting and fun for us. :)

Use a small flat screwdriver to pop the center of the plastic holder out (should be two of them), then you can pull the plastic pins and the panel should easily be removed.

For this hitch assembly - is this just something I wait to receive from Tesla at some indeterminate time in the future? The owners manual seems to say to not use a 3rd party one.
It may be very specific to Tesla and we also don't know if there is a difference between the full 5000lb one and the lighter 3500 lb one.

Did you check all over your car for one wrapped up in a plastic bag?

Can't remember if you said you ordered the accessory hitch and if you did, they owe you one. If not and you want it, you owe them $200 to get it.

The one in post #15 looks identical to Tesla's and I wouldn't have an issue using it on my vehicle. I'm surprised that Tesla didn't provide you with a hitch. Did you get a due bill for a sunshade? If so, is there a hitch on there as well? Otherwise, you'll have to ask your DS. I'm pretty sure they know you got a hitch without paying for one. :)

It is Tesla's - I go the accessory hitch on delivery of my 90D. You can see the Tesla symbol on the sticker! ;)

And I did get a due bill for the sunshade. I called a few times after I first got delivery to make sure. They said I would get a call when they finally get some. I'm not sure any of the delivery specialists had ever even seen one...

Sorry, I didn't look too closely. :( A while ago, I watched the official youtube video (installation instructions) of the one directly from "bosal" . It looks identical.
I would wager it is exactly like the one you saw in the youtube video. Just branded with a Tesla sticker.

I'm also surprised @itay didn't get one because he paid for the accessory hitch. I bet it's hiding in there somewhere. ;)

I looked everywhere in the car - no hitch. My DS seemed to say I would get it sometime later this year (since it is the accessory hitch). I did order it originally.

I guess I can email her and ask again and say that others have gotten it (and show her that picture).

Bummer. Hope you don't need it anytime soon. If you do, perhaps a request in the local subforum to borrow someone's they're not using.

I did a google search to see if they're for sale but couldn't find anything that looked right.

Yes, at least get the $200 hitch if you aren't getting the $750 tow package.
I ordered this flat rack to carry luggage, mulch, etc. -- Amazon.com: Pro Series 63153 Rambler Hitch Cargo Carrier for 2" Receivers: Automotive
and I ordered this weatherproof bag to put luggage in for vacations -- Amazon.com: ROLA 59119 Rainproof Cargo Carrier Bag 59" x 24" x 24" (20 Cu Ft): Automotive

Hi loganintx,

Curious to know how your cargo carrier and ROLA luggage bag have been working? I'm getting prepared for a roadtrip in my 75D and wanted to know how it has been with in regards to range loss as well?
