2021 Model Y Sideview Mirrors Limited Adjustability

Amazing and practical solution, thanks! I logged the issue right after delivery and my MY was in the shop for 2 days replacing the rearview mirror. Picked it up yesterday and the problem wasn't fixed (not surprising considering the solution), but also it now vibrates when I drive. So the image in the mirror is blurry, which makes the issue worse since their "fix".
Service tech is coming out Tuesday and I will show him this thread, but also now need to figure out the vibration issue.

Moral of this story is to probably just take the fix into your own hands.

We picked up our Model Y on 12.10.2020. Everything was perfect with the delivery EXCEPT the drivers sideview mirror. I was adjusting it at Tesla and couldn't quite get it right. I figured I needed to play around more with the seat setting and mirrors on the road. Basically I need the drivers sideview mirror to be tilted more out and up. I was going crazy because the passenger side was fine and I've never been in a car where I can't get the mirrors right. As it stands right now I have a huge blindspot - I can either have it tilted in and up so the side of my car takes up half view out of the mirror or down and out so all I can see is the asphalt.

I called Tesla and reported the problem. They called me back about an hour later and said that it is a known issue and they are working on it. It has something to do with the Auto-dimming feature on the 2021's and how that has reduced the range of motion that the mirror can be adjusted. My delivery specialist said it might be able to be fixed through software update??

This issue does not seem like it will effect everyone - my wife is 5'3" and has no problem (I'm 6'5"). We also have an S and I I have no problem with that.

Anyone else experiencing this? or have any additional info?

Similar issue. I've always used the rule to put my face against the driver's window and move the mirror until I can just see a tiny bit of the side of the car. Sitting normally you won't see anything. It won't go far enough out to do that for me.

I just fixed my mirror. Turn the mirror so that it is tilted downward and to the right, that should give you enough room to slide your fingers in the outside between the frame and the glass and apply even pressure across the back of the glass to pull it out. Nothing in there looked super fragile or like it was going to break. After that I snipped off about half an inch from the top 2 tabs (see the linked picture at the bottom). Pushed the glass back on and I can position it perfectly, and I have room to move it farther up and to the left so I'm pretty sure it's not touching anything to do with the heating electronics. Photos attached for clarity: Removing tabs from 2021 Model Y driver's sideview mirror to allow full range of motion of the mirror
Can you re upload? Photos aren’t there

So the Mobile Service came, and he popped open the mirror for me. I had to perform the surgery myself, and it worked. He also confirmed that my mirror is heated, but not auto dimming. He also confirmed I have pedestrian speaker. I am a happy camper now!

He also said the best way to get Tesla to fix this design is to send Elon a message through Twitter. I don’t have a Twitter account (and not interested in having one), so it would be great if anyone else anyone would do the honor! Thanks!

All -

Going to embark on this fix tomorrow AM. As I have not messed with the MY mirrors before do the actual mirror parts just pop right off if I follow the directions and put my fingers back there and pull??

Just confirming there is not some little thing I need to move to release them.

Thanks for the awesome fix!

The mirror doesn't come off easy - takes a good strong steady pull but no tools needed and nothing to release. Try not to put all the pressure on the edges.

SirPaon: I understand your caution. Plastic clips can break.
I'm going to study the photo of the back of the mirror. This shows WHERE the clips are, and will give me some idea of how to pull.
I'll let you know how it goes!!!!

Just did this mod. Super easy. Yes, you need to pull firmly on the mirror, and when it pops off, it...doesn't...sound...good!!!

Tabs are very easy to break off. I used my fingertips. I lined up the mirror tabs, pressed mirror back on,...DONE!

(FYI: I asked the most knowledgeable service guy at my SC about this. He says he's not heard anything about it!!!)
(FYI: The production date on the back of the mirror was 11/15/2020, so it was new.)

Thanks for this, I did it on my car and now can cover my blind spot. Makes a big difference!

Two additional notes:
  1. In my case, I had to clip a 3rd tab - the one on the lower left. I circled it in green in a copy of Blingeorkl's photo, see below.
  2. When I popped off the mirror, one of the wires disconnected. I almost didn't notice this. The wire in question is circled in Blue. To reconnect it, slide the connector over the corresponding pin on the back of the mirror.

I put in a service request for mine and they have ordered parts. I think I'll let them try it before I do the tab fix.
Update. Mobile service came out today and fixed mine. A new mirror assembly had been ordered but I don't think they used it. The dirt on the assembly seems like what I already had there lol. I didn't get to talk to them unfortunately. They were here, fixed it, and gone, before I ever noticed the message from the app on my phone. But when I went out to check the mirror is has the full range of motion I expect now.

EDIT: I just looked that the invoice for the service (it was free but there is still an invoice.) The notes state "Adjusted drivers mirror per toolbox article #3114200". So for anyone having issues getting service to fix it giving them that to reference might help.

This definitely helps, thanks! Mobile tech is out right now and didn't know much about the issue, but did say his manager had added a note to the service request. When he looked it up, he found the same article. I took a brief look at it and it basically says they are now authorized to trim the bump stops behind the mirror. He's doing so now.

I had the same mirror issue and service center fixed it for me back in January. The service tech told me they have a documented solution in their knowledge base, interesting the mobile tech was not aware about the tech note

As noted, there was a message on the service request from his manager, so I think he would have found it regardless, but it didn't hurt to show him that it was already being done by other techs.

Ha! I went for a test drive over the weekend and told the rep I couldn't get the mirrors to move out far enough for me to see properly. When all the way up - they wouldn't travel straight out - only diagonally (out and down). It was to the point I couldn't see towards the blind spot. They asked me to switch MYs and same problem. I thought - huh . . .

Glad to hear I wasn't going crazy!

Wish I found this thread earlier. Got Suma mirrors to fix blind spot. Found this solution today and cut the tabs and it’s amazing. I’m thinking to put stock mirror back on, but already got used to Suma mirrors. I probably can see blind spots and 2 lanes over now 😁
