72 hours to report issues??!!

Hello,

So, I spoke to my delivery specialist about scratches on my windshield. After no help, I was directed to an Assistant Orientation Manager. He told my I only had 72 hours to report issues after taking delivery of my car. Is this correct?! Is it written somewhere?

I don't understand why we would have only 72 hours to report issues and or defects. I haven't even driven 500 miles on our new car. Most of the miles are up to the service center.

I'm really annoyed at how issues are handled at Tesla.

From Tesla's perspective... It is probably to prevent situations where customers damage their cars and then blame Tesla. There has to be a cutoff at some point. Just be sure to fully inspect your Tesla in the first three days of ownership.


Yeah, I understand but if it's something you missed or didn't think to check? So does it become a warranty issue after that?!
 
I think 72 hours is plenty to notice defects.

You really can't say that for every issue. I think it would depend on the type of issue or defect. I did a pretty thorough inspection of my paint. I think I have a good eye for things like that. They ended replacing my whole front bumper. Later I found small scratches on my windshield on the outside of the glass. Who thinks to look carefully at your windshield?!

That's what they told me and others who were picking up and the end of quarter rush (9/29/18). Just email the SC with issues. Understood that not everyone will notice everything within 72 hours. Hopefully they will still handle your issues.
 
I've heard of them being very nice to take care of your issues even past the 72 hours as well. It's just what noted on the due bill....but I could see it being abused if its more drastic things like scratches on rims/paint etc. that could easily caused by the owner rather than a manufacturing defect.

You have 72 hours to return the car / refuse delivery. The 72 hours refers to items which would then become "Wear and Tear" items, such as paint defects, scratches, etc. Any item that would normally be covered under warranty is still covered under warranty. Things like blemishes, scratches, dings, scuffs, aren't covered by any car company.

I had a similar issue with scratches on the windshield that I noticed after it came back from the body shop the first time. They said they will take care of it.
 
I found a useful 'Delivery Checklist' for the 3 that someone created.

Model 3 Delivery Checklist

Used that as a base, get super in the weeds on the photos and sent an email with photos and description to all the people involved in my M3 delivery... Salesman, delivery liason, service center contact etc. within 72 hours to get evidence of it 'in the system'.

The checklist helped me look at things I wouldn't have thought to consider.

After I took delivery of my M3, I noticed a minor pimple/outward facing ding on the rear quarter panel. Reported it the next day at the SC. They documented it. 6 months later (literally last week), I dropped it off and they used PDR to fix it. No issue - because I reported. You really need to go over your car after delivery, note all issue, and report them right away. Only fair to you and Tesla.

I went into the SC today to see if their detail guy could buff out the scratches. I know it was a long shot but best option for me at the moment. I get there and within 5 minutes, they bring the car up to the front and tell me the detail guy says it will make it worse.

I pleaded my case again stating that I really couldn't see the fine scratches when I took delivery of the car. So now they are not saying I had 72 hours to report it. Now they are saying they can't cover it because I took the car to a 3rd party tint place. Wonder how I can escalate this issue??

Yeah, you can't buff out scratches in glass. Years ago my wife bought a VW Jetta. During prep, they lilghts scratched (more like scuffed) the front windshield. We took delivery but noted the scratches. They tried to buff out the scratches, but no luck and had to replace the windshield.

Regarding delivery inspection - I hear you - I didn't see the pimple either and I did a pretty thorough inspection. Wasn't until I got home under less intense lighting did I see it.

There are some YouTube videos with stuff that can polish out scratches. I'm sure I can try it if all else fails. I was waiting to have my front bumper paint issues take care of which took awhile. During that time, I got the front windshield tinted (UV protection - no tint). I thought it was scratches in the tint. Never did I think there would be scratches like that on a new car. After I took it in to get the tint replaced, that's when they told me the scratches were on the windshield.
 
Sometimes 72 hours isn't enough... either based on weather, or just life commitments... or waiting for it to get to the detailer for review...

I think if they were delivering cars in better shape it might be less of a concern...

I guess you should just document everything you can right off the bat and hope you don't miss anything big.

That reminds me, I forgot to mention some scratches on the rear window added during service last Thursday. Just minor superficial, but would blow if it caused it to crack later down the road or something.
 
Understand them not want to warrany a car that had aftermarket tint installed. Tint guys are notorious for cutting into the glass with their razor blades.

If you can feel the scratch with your fingernail, the only fix is to replace the glass.

I have tinted all my cars and I've taken them to the same place. I've never had an issue with tint guys ever cutting the glass. I've had a longer relationship with my tint company vs Tesla. Ive had better luck and service with my tint guys so far.
