Any chance I will get delivery by EOQ?

Hey all,

I placed my order yesterday with a referral code for a black 75D base model. I will be a first time Tesla owner, I really wanted a Model S but for tax reasons I went with the Model X.

I am taking the section 179 deduction for 2017 so I need delivery by December 31st.

Is there even a remote chance I could have my Model X by then? I am in California so the actual transit portion would be hours not days and I would even fly to Fremont and drive it home if I had to just to take delivery by December 31.

The problem is I absolutely cannot afford to risk it because this is all part of my tax strategy for 2017 so if there is even a chance I would not get delivery by December 31 then I won't even bother, I will just start looking at inventory models pretty soon and hope for a black (or silver) base model. The base model inventory units do seem to have dried up the last week or so.

Thoughts? Does anyone know if Tesla helps get creative with "taking delivery" for tax purposes?

My order was placed August 6. So, accordingly, that's November 6 this quarter. Then, there's the holidays and all that. I was originally scheduled to get my car the middle of September, but there was a transport delay and delivery was the 23rd. No idea how that all translates into a real/normal Q4!

I would say with your location there was a good chance of Q4 delivery, but I wouldn't bet the bank on it! I would check with your DS and make it clear you need delivery in December/2017 and what do they think? When I was discussing ordering in August, I was told there were production slots in September, and there shouldn't be a problem getting delivery in September (usual EOQ rush to get things to the clients). So, see what they tell you about production and do they have a slot available.

Best of luck!

I ordered mine on 8/30/2017 and the estimate was 6 weeks. Then I was told it could be by the end of the Q3. I got it < 4 weeks on 9/28/2017. I also flew up to Fremont (San Jose) from Torrance California to give myself a better chance since I wanted the 1% interest rate. Not sure I had to. I would check with your Delivery Specialist. Your My Tesla will update soon probably but mine was not accurate.

If I was to buy I am in the same spot trying to utilize 179.

That said I will not be rolling the dice and ordering new, I will hope to see one appear on second hand market or hope Tesla releases that inventory at some point they just took away.

Still in the fence either way.

You are absolutely right from what my CPA told me. You wouldn't get the tax credits or bonus depreciation if you buy used.

The thing is I never see used Model X for more than $10k off MSRP so when I weigh in the tax credits it almost never makes sense to buy used for me. Now that's only considering base models, I am not looking at fully loaded.

I'm going to look at inventory for a few weeks and if something pops up early November I'll just change to that.

Pretty sure Tesla will try their hardest to get as many sales in by end of year. Last year, my hubby ordered mid-November and took delivery on 12/31. And i'm in Hawaii where shipping takes an extra week or two.

I'm just afraid to risk it if its too close! And last year they weren't in "production hell" with the M3! But that is good to know how tight you cut it. Did they tell you January delivery and then deliver in December?

True, no production hell last year. Car was completed mid-Dec so we didn’t think it would get to Hawaii by year-end since can take up to 3 weeks to ship. We actually expected an early Jan delivery but car came in 2 days before we picked it up.

New Inventory | Tesla

From what I understand, you can have EAP removed from an inventory car, don't think there's any other significant options on there.

A lot of us here are doing the tax thing this year. Problem is that December 31 delivery is too late UNLESS you can justify/document/PROVE a legitimate business use on New Year's Eve!

Your deductions are a percentage of the mileage that was business use. So if you pick up and drive home and then to a New Years party and back, you get zero deduction!!! The ONLY way to pick up on 12/31 and get 100% deduction is to pick up the X, drive straight from delivery center to a legitimate business location, and then drive to "home" or your business "base." On a holiday. Unless you own a bar tending business, the IRS may question why you did business on a holiday. Be careful. Talk to tax person.

BTW if anyone needs a referral for year end X purchase I can offer you mine and I'll let you have the kids Tesla (already have one as gift) or the black wall charger. PM me.
