Third party site says it came in 2015, but it seems it came 2014
    Can someone detail the nuances?
    Was it late 2014?

Hardware 1 came with all cars built after mid-September 2014. The actual software (autosteer) came out in late 2015.

Tesla doesn't do model years. It makes improvements when it makes improvements.

Which is another reason to ask / investigate / explore and really find out if a particular used car you are interested in has the stuff you'd "assume" would be on the car. Tesla re-packages contents of packages on a whim. Go feature by feature down your list of must-haves and ask, "got that? Y/N"
