Does anyone know what the autopilot (without FSD) limits are?

Can it leave the lane to avoid an obstacle?

If it’s not following another vehicle, will the autopilot stop the car if there is an obstacle in the road? If so, what are the limitations?

FSD just adds auto lane change and navigate on autopilot. Autopilot will stop for car sized obstacles most of the time but not smaller obstacles (and definitely not traffic barrels! haha). I'm not sure about firetruck sized obstacles in the latest builds...

There's a setting in the NoA option for those with either EAP or FSD which which change lanes for you.

But the OP seems to want some critical characteristics of Full Self Driving.

Current AP gets you TACC and AutoSteer, which work well, but you have to watch for stationary objects in your lane.
 
Ok, thanks for the info. So, Tesla’s Autopilot is adoptive cruise control and lane departure?

Tesla refers to it as Traffic Aware Cruise Control, which basically uses its sensors to maintain speed and distance from cars in your lane. It is designed to be used on the highway. Lane departure warning is a safety feature that enables an alert and a bit of steering correction if you wander out of your lane without signalling. You enable/disable this setting in the menu.

AutoSteer, which is included with AP, will attempt to keep your car in its lane. Also, meant to be used on the highway at this time.

Bottom line, try these features out but be super diligent to take over at a moments notice. The goal is for all this to improve over time until we eventually get to some form of autonomous driving, which is going to take a while...
