Blind Spot Monitoring - Red Cars

But, is it consistent on distance? Is it only when you are passing a car and trying to change lanes too soon? Or, does it also work if someone is just in your blindspot when you turn on the blinker?

Yes, it is only when you have your turn signals on. And only if the car believes you are going to side swipe the other car.

I'm sure it is something that will improve over time, but in my experience, the car won't complain if it thinks you have space to squeeze in and get rear-ended by a car 2 inches behind you going 30MPH faster than you. More useful than the color, from what I can tell, the car doesn't really show cars that are at a safe distance behind you, so if it shows any cars at all (behind you) then they are too close to change lanes.
