So the word from Tesla continues to be that it is for “future use”. Should we believe that statement? It seems when the occasional accident happens where someone crashes while using autopilot, it would make Tesla’s position in court much better if they had cabin video showing the driver reading a book or sleeping. I suspect it’s part of the black box. Any thoughts?

I don’t think it’ll be turned on without your complete consent. You can also put a piece of tape over it or one of those laptop privacy sliders (Amazon has’em). Also just rip the damn thing out if you want. Orrrr buy a regular ICE car from 1970 with nothing to “track” you.

I’m not a lawyer, but it seems like they already have the ability to use images captured by the cameras in the context of collecting “safety analysis data” in accident or near-accident circumstances. Note that it just states “camera” not “external camera.”

I would suggest that after Tesla explicitly said that the interna camera was not activated, that one would have an expectation of privacy from video recording in the car, and thusly, not usable.

As usual, you can adjust your data sharing preferences by tapping Controls > Safety & Security > DATA SHARING > Allow Cabin Camera Analytics.

I was thinking today that it would be cool to be able to have a thumbnail of the camera on the screen that you can enlarge to see your children or pets in the back seat.

I'm really hoping the next step for it will be ocular or face tracking so that they can use that for autopilot instead of the torque check on the steering wheel. Still obviously encourage hands be on the wheel, but way less nags about pressure on the wheel. It's more important for people to watch the road.
