Climate Change Denial

All of you taken in by the almighty CO2 molecule should listen to NYU professor Dr. Steven Koonin, former undersecretary for science in the Obama Administration. Dr. Koonin has a much better handle on what is happening with climate than all of you put together. CNBC interviewed him.

Koonin of course was BP's chief scientist after he left academia (perhaps he developed an expensive habit?). He makes fatalistic arguments which is all fine and good. Someone has to sell books and appear on talk shows to present that argument. He certainly doesn't deny that CO2 has changed the climate and warmed it. He also doesn't argue that we need to stop using hydrocarbons for energy so extensively. He just favors a balanced approach. Hey - someone has to tell people what they want to hear.

The very simple reality is that costs of energy transitions are not that high and they have multiple positive effects beyond CO2. So even if you are a super climate optimist (i.e.. head in the sand), the answer is still the same.

Have to love the childish talk about "dihydrogen monoxide". You might want to try to read the room.

Physicist, not a climate scientist. When people comment outside of their area of expertise they usually don't know as much as the experts. Would you take the view of a climate scientist disagreeing about properties of physics? That said he even admits that humans are influencing the climate, completely contradicting your point. He's just complaining about the pace of changing to a carbon free economy while ignoring the many benefits of doing so.

dihydrogen monoxide!?!
Dangerous stuff!
Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

Just simply stating that a former Obama Administration leading scientist has by far more knowledge about climate than any of you is no way an attack. It should be taken as just a matter of fact.

Except you have no idea who I am, or what my qualifications are. I could be a “leading scientist” for all you know.

One again, you have taken pure speculation as a “matter of fact”.

Looks like the Arctic ice is recovering quite well this year. The Arctic ice extent is considerably higher than last year, plus the satellite era minimum of 2012. According to the NSIDC, as of August 22 this is how the Arctic ice status stands:

2021 - 5,576,000 km^2
2020 - 4,704,000 km^2
2019 - 4,734,000 km^2
2018 - 5,321,000 km^2
2017 - 5,243,000 km^2
2016 - 5,046,000 km^2
2012 - 4,346,000 km^2

When September comes up, the Arctic sea ice minimum for 2021 will be the 9th year in a row closing higher than the 3,387,000 minimum of 2012. Anybody doubt me on this? The more the global warming alarmists proclaim the Arctic ice is melting away to oblivion, the more nature is proving them wrong.

How many years in a row for the Arctic sea ice extent to close above the 2012 minimum will it take before you realize the Arctic ice is not melting away?

So I guess we should send ships to harvest those ice for the drought elsewhere? LOL

Rain falls at Greenland ice summit for first time on record

"Rain fell at the highest point on the Greenland ice sheet last week for the first time on record, another worrying sign of warming for the ice sheet already melting at an increasing rate, scientists said on Friday.
...
In total, 7 billion tonnes of rain fell across Greenland over three days, from Aug. 14 through Aug. 16 -- the largest amount since records began in 1950."

Ice, snow, water - same thing, nothing to see here...

1. Arctic ice is almost all in water, does not change sea levels.
2. There is ice on Mars and the moon.
3. Glaciers are still melting and receding.

Climate crisis made deadly German floods ‘up to nine times more likely’

The record-shattering rainfall that caused deadly flooding across Germany and Belgium in July was made up to nine times more likely by the climate crisis, according to research. The study also showed that human-caused global heating has made downpours in the region up to 20% heavier. The work reinforces the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s landmark report this month that there is “unequivocal” evidence that greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are the main cause of worsening extreme weather.

There is really no point in conservatives denying climate change. No one is fooled. The debate should be about the severity of the risks and what measures to take to sufficiently mitigate the risks, not whether or not it is actually happening. That is what it should have always been about.

Conservatives should be pushing hard to replace fossil fuel power plants with renewable or nuclear. No one gives a crap where their electricity comes from, as long as it's there, and renewables can be sufficient and reliable with appropriate stationary storage. The quicker and more completely you change over stuff like that, the more room in the risk budget there is to keep CO2 emitting stuff you want, like vroom vroom sports and classic cars.
