My Tesla Ranger mentioned to me today that they're going to be doing a modification to the front cooling fans. What they are going to do is install a manifold that covers the entire radiator and funnels the air into the two fans, which will now be standing a little above the radiator.

The point here is that when the fans run, they will draw air through the entire radiator, instead of just through the area underneath the fans themselves. This will provide a significant improvement in heat dissipation.

The install requires removing the radiator, which means they have to drain the coolant system. So there's a bit of work involved.

I have to say this sounds like an excellent idea! Goes to show that Tesla is still putting some thought into improving the Roadster, despite having most of their resources on Model S.

My 2.5 is already designed like that. My tech described the same reasons. Not sure when it became standard.

So my born-on 1/1/11 2.5 has improved cooling?

Interesting, I wonder if all 2.5's are like that. Possibly not; Tesla often introduces new updates as soon as they become available. (My late-2.0 has quite a few 2.5 features.) When did you get your car?

I wonder if this is a bulletin for 1,5's as well.

Doug I had this done to my 2.0 Roadster last summer. It was a noticeable improvement.

Very likely. My fans look like this:

    What do yours look like?

I don't have a picture, but this is how my fans looked BEFORE the mod. The mod includes a shroud that covers the entire radiator, directing all the airflow through radiator. The fans mount to the shroud which raises them about a 1/2 inch.

Yes! I got it when they did the 24K service. Noticed it yesterday when I washed the car.

Not the best example (and not from a Tesla), but I assume you are talking about a fan shroud assembly something like this:

(now it will match my forum picture better!)

Now I need to look. Have not washed it since my 24K service.

Nothing about "per bulletin" or something like that in the paperwork?

During hot humid weather the the air conditioning would not switch the cooling to the battery as often which keeps the cabin cooler. I did not notice any difference in battery temp it stayed the same as before the mod.

Great, that's what I was hoping you'd say.

That's what I was hoping for as well; increased efficiency means less time on the batteries and more for me.

while attempting to track down a weird (fan?) noise problem with my 2.0 roadster (see my posting in the thread: Battery "grinding" sound?) i asked the menlo park service folks about the fan/shroud update mentioned in this thread and was told:

"During the inspection of the front fans and condenser, if found faulty the upgrade will be added."
