CPO Order is in, question on delivery

I finally found the right CPO car, I put my deposit in yesterday. It's an S60, with AP1. It's a sacrifice not getting an 85, but it allowed me to come in under budget, so I can afford dash cams, window tint, and other niceties. Anyway, the car is currently being refurbished about 600 miles away. I would have liked to take delivery in California where it is, and drive it the 600 miles home to save the delivery fee.

I was surprised when my OA mentioned that I cannot pick up the car in California, since I would have to pay a sales tax on the car (I live in tax free Oregon). The tax would be more expensive than what I would pay in delivery fees. He said it was not possible to avoid the tax if picked up in California, and driven / registered in Oregon. I've purchased cars in Washington before, and didn't have any issues. They sorted out all of the Oregon tax stuff, and I headed home with no issues.

Is this all correct? Is it possible to pick up my car in California, avoid taxes and all that when I drive home to Oregon? Is this a Tesla 'rule', or just commonplace that I wasn't aware of?

Hmmmm....it gets closer to 'break even' when I factor in a plane ticket, hotel for a night, food on the road. My delivery specialist quoted me just $1K to deliver the car. I was surprised, I thought it was always $2K. My main thought for a CA pickup, was to hit Freemont and see if I could work into a tour or something. Nevada doesn't have the same draw, but thanks for the tips!

Has anyone else had a $1K delivery from another state?

My car was in LA when I put the deposit down and got the same story about the CA taxes. They wanted the 2K to ship to TX, but would move the car to Tempe, AZ for free. So I flew to Tempe and made the 1st road trip in the car back to DFW.

Thank you! I've actually decided to look for a new inventory car, perhaps something close to a base model with EAP. Right now trying to get in contact with a local OA who was recommended by another forum member. I'll be sure to post pictures if something goes through. (And make sure to post some yourself when you get your car!)

Pay the $1K to get the car shipped to you if you're uneasy about the drive or the additional fees (lodging; time lost; etc.). A trip in a 60 will require about a 45 min stop pretty much every couple of hours due to the limited range (may be different if you can keep it under 65 mph).

I just had the same experience back in October - bought a CPO that was in CA and had it shipped to Tempe for free to avoid the 'double tax' issue...then had a great experience of a road trip back to St. Louis. I got an 85D, so Qbenjamin is right, the drive will take a little longer in a 60, but the road trip was an awesome way to get familiar with the new car (1st time Tesla owner).

They also offered me home delivery for free, which is certainly a good savings, but you do miss out on the whole delivery experience of picking up at a SC. A ticket on Southwest isn't usually too bad, and a night or two motel can be cheap - or just use the 'camp' mode and sleep in the car!

Don't you pay tax where you license the car? I lived in Idaho and bought a CPO X in July. I flex out to Chicago to pick it up and drive it home instead of paying $2k deliver. I licensed it and paid sales tax for Idaho. The part that sucked is that the Monday after I got home, my office announced a closure and I got relocated to Oregon (with no sales tax) so if I'd known that was going to happen, I could have saved $6k and licensed it in OR .

From reading the comments here, it sounds like this is a 'silly' tax law that exists only in CA. Oh well. As a fellow Oregonian, welcome

Actually a CA state representative introduced a bill to amend the sales tax rules to encourage more Tesla purchase tourism but it did not make it. Oh well.

Wow. You really made a big stink over wanting a tour of the factory. I don’t want to pay tax mommy. Then take the tour a different time. How hard is that? Jerry Garcia not impressed.
