cracked rear window - auto glass or Tesla to mend it?

Autoglass will repair it, when I had them replace my windscreen the fitter had done several rear glass on Tesla's previously. He was clearly pretty knowledgeable about Model 3 in general IMHO.

I'm pretty sure he also said that they sometimes get called to Tesla to do replacements for customers that book there.

That's a really useful comment. I am going to talk to an auto glass specialist tomorrow and may have a better instinct then. My gut response is to go with Tesla but that could be expensive - and ironically they may well use Autoglass anyway!

My insurance tell me they require Autoglass to repair a crack in the rear window of my Model 3. Anybody experience of Autoglass and repair of Tesla Model 3 repair?
Long shot but your car isn't an August 2019 model is it? Quite a few of us had the cracked rear screen issues resultant from a bad batch where the heating element was faulty. Warranty job with Tesla replacing the full rear screen. You may well have dinged it but thought I'd check as it may save you a few bob. Maybe not even the rear screen but worth knowing

Yes it is a August 2019 model! Is there evidence I can refer to, to demonstrate this to Tesla? It's booked in for the 22nd of December.

Where does the break start? The issue was with cracks that would appear within the glass and starting at a joint of the rear heater (which would be shorted at that point and not heat any further).

Ah, glad I posted! So if you look at the crack it should (hopefully) be contained within the glass, you shouldn't feel anything on the surface. Mine propagated a couple of inches from one of the lower elements. The key is that it doesn't break the surface - that way they'll struggle to claim it was impact damage. You could also reference these forums.

Good luck with it.

My brother's 2019 was a crack from the bottom right, not as obvious on the heater line as Pugg5ter's image and it went all the way to the edge, but no visible damage on the outside at all and was replaced under warranty.

Just got my Tesla in December and took it for a tint job and a crack was noticed on inspection, right under the pillar…. Didn’t see it at delivery but it’s really subtle unless you are looking at the right angle. Anyone have any issues with newer model 3m’ back glass cracks? I have an appointment with Tesla service scheduled.
