Curb Rash on brand new Model Y Rims... How should I repair them or do I need to replace them? Worth to claim insurance?

Hey everyone,

Curb rash happened in my first day trying the FSD. Both front and rear wheels on driver side got damaged(Details seen on the attached picture) :(
Anyone can share some opinions if I have to replace them, repair them, or can live with them? Thanks in advance for any helps.

that looks pretty bad. The rims may be bent. The one tire looks damaged as well. A wheel repair specialist will be able to tell you if the rims are repairable. If they are probably $150 -$180 for each to be repaired. You need at least one new tire as well. Are the tires both holding air? Any vibration when you go down the road? For sure at least the one tire is unsafe.

Thanks. Yea, I am trying the self drive but obviously, it doesn't detect the sidewall at all. It has been 5 hours and I haven't seen any leaks yet. Will give it a bit more time. I just drove it for 5 miles and I don't see any vibration. Will find a wheel repair specialist nearby to check it. Thanks a lot.

Personally, I'd be hesitant to take it up with insurance. The $ doesn't come from thin air. They may raise your rates and it might not end up being worth it, in the end.

Gotta love it! Elon's been able get people pay $ (sometimes big $) to be unpaid beta testers, providing free data, testing, edge cases, etc. and wash their hands of liability since it's beta...

I came in looking to suggest repair, but your rim looks like it was even deformed and had a chunk taken off, much worse than normal curb rash. Not sure if rim repair would be able to fix that much, but doesn't hurt to ask them.

FSD Beta has been known to curb wheels unfortunately (at high speeds even).

Dang, sorry about the curb rash! Esp with the Gemini wheels. Those are supposed to be much more curb rash resistant than the 21” uberturbines.

I wouldn’t do insurance claim. Get an estimate first …. Your rates may go up with a claim like that.

With the loss of the ultrasonic sensors, I’m much more paranoid about parallel parking or going near curbs….. ironic, for a car that is synonymous with (semi) autonomous driving.

And yet the USS sensors have Nothing to do with curbs nor do they help in Any way with this issue…..

USS are practically worthless for preventing curbing wheels or the front splitter, that's why you see plenty of Teslas with curbed wheels.

Ouch!

Definitely get a professional opinion. If the wheels are not bent, repair may do the trick. My own experience tells me to never cheap out on wheels and tires, especially on a car that can quickly pass a ton (100mph). Here in Japan, wheel repair is frowned upon by the National Inspection system, and Tesla replacements are outrageously expensive. For me, finding a used set of OEM wheels and tires would be least expensive option. Hope you get some good advice at a reasonable cost. Rarely does insurance pay for something like this without getting it out of you later.

I think I’ll pass on FSD 😳

Cheers,

I haven't heard of FSD curbing wheels. I guess I missed many of those posts. My experience with FSDb has been pretty good really except for the occasional phantom brake. I haven't driven it in the city though.

The Gemeni wheels are more resistant to curb damage because of the aero caps. The only part of the wheel that's exposed is the lip where it meets with the bead of the tire.

They also aren't sticking out like the 21" Ubers. The rear wheels on an MYP are really easy to curb...I speak from experience. I don't curb wheels often.

I'd remove the aero-cover and see how much damage, if any, is behind it.

Clean the tires and wheels and sand any sharp edges so they look better.
Nothing to worry about.
Those wheels are tough.
A low curb near us has serrated sharp edges on a really narrow local road. So of course
I rubbed against it. Not recommended, but no problem.
