That is exactly what it is. I think it’s another great trolling from Tesla, so much hype about a simple accessory. I believe it’s useful in China because of the high numbers of cars parked outdoors.
Not exactly. It actually comes with the mobile connector. So, it is an entire EVSE in a locking cabinet. (And then you can buy an adapter so you can take the mobile connector out and use it elsewhere.)
It seems to be a bit more than that, it has a circuit breaker at the top and the part in the middle seems hard wired to the circuit breaker.
It could just be something needed to meet an outdoor electrical regulatory requirement in China?
To be honest it looks like a PITA to use with the way it shows the cable coiled up in some photos, but hanging out the side in others.
My take is that it's designed to prevent theft, tampering or vandalism, where other people can get to it such as a Chinese apartment carpark.
And Porsche has the same charger in a box design..
It's also cheaper than the Wall Connector in China
(Note I believe the prices include install)
