Interesting. That looks like a simple retrofit -- or is it something that only comes with a new tire?
I was told it was a new tire made for the Model S. You can buy them. They are around $350 a piece.

That is interesting. I needed two new tires, but as far as I know they just installed the normal Michelin MXM4s (I was not told or a quieter option). Maybe that is only available for the 21s?View attachment 64224
This is the inside of the new tires, these came on my P85 with 21" wheels. Found this out after I ran over a bolt.

Name of the new 21" tire? And do any 19's come with that foam strip? Honestly, I'm no tire expert, but it seems that foam insert would be a low cost no-brainer for oem tires on luxury cars, no?
Are you talking about the Conti Extreme Contact DW? Haven't they been around for some time, but I don't recall them have the foam insert, is that a recent change? It's a ContiExtremeContact and it's only 21" for now. The noise reduction is impressive.

I will need to go look at the tire when I'm home again next week. It's definitely not the DW. Here's what was on my invoice:
TIRE - P245/35R21 - CSC5 (1030074-00-B)
Probably the Continental Sport Contact 5.
Is the foam insert part of the tire? or simply something that Tesla adds later?Could well be, but TireRack's description doesn't talk about the foam insert either. I wonder if it's the same tire, or if Tesla has a special SKU.

The glue might be important too, I'm trying to imagine what glue would keep it there with the normal deformation that tires go through and the number of times in their life they go through it...The news about the foam liners on the inside of the Conti tires is very interesting. There's no reason this can't be done to other tires. Accordingly I'm starting a search for the right foam to use for sound dampening tires that I already have. I have a few good leads and as soon as I talk to the manufacturers I'll post what I find. This should be a very easy DYI task, as the foam is just glued on to the inside of the tire. This will be the final step in sound dampening my Model S as after all of the other work tire noise is even more noticeable.
