Musk: Most cars don't improve over time, but the Model S by virtue of OTA updates gets smarter and better as time passes. Almost feels like driving a new car. With version 6.2 of the software, we're happy to introduce two new things. Helpful for people that don't drive the Model S that may put their mind at ease.

First: Range Assurance application. Always running quietly in background even when nav not in use. Communicates real time with Superchargers and destination chargers, disregarding any that are in use, warns you when you're about to drive out of range.

Over next 12 months, most of Europe, North America, China, Japan, Southern Australia will be supercharger covered.

Map shows you most convenient charging locations, directions to the closest one.

Calculates in elevation changes, driving style, "makes it basically impossible for a Model S driver to run out of range unintentionally," says Musk.

Second feature: Trip Planner. Automatically navigates to destination, integrating your best charging options en route.

Software figures out the fastest, most convenient route to your destination, including how long you'll have to stop at a Supercharger location to ensure the right amount of charge.

Musk says Supercharger time requirement matches "convenient inflection points" of long travel. "Unless you want to wear a diaper," he says. So if you drive for 2-3 hours, says Musk, you'll probably want to take a 20 or 30 minute break anyway. Software will tell you exactly how long you'll need to charge while you're on break to have enough range to get to your final destination.

Musk says Version 7 will include UI overhaul that enables Automatic Steering .
"Now almost able to travel from San Francisco to Seattle with the driver barely touching the wheel at all."

Looking to release Auto Steering feature "within 3 months."

Musk also says you'll soon be able to summon your car remotely. "Only on private property because it's not legal." Can tell your car to come meet you, or send it back to the garage and have it close the garage door, all from a smartphone app.

Also updated: Valet Mode, which limits speed, torque, and "confidential information."

Musk says these updates will allow drivers to do road trips in a "super-optimized way."
