Elon says AWD and Perf orders start at end of next week!

One needs look no further than Volkswagen..... a GTi will smoke a Phaeton (#RIP) in any performance category you can come up with, because the Phaeton was (basically an A8/R8) living room on wheels.

Just because the GTi was a better performer in every measurable performance category, the Phaeton was more expensive.

I only wish Elon HADN'T said the Model S would always be quicker, though.... Elon Musk on Twitter

I think Elon was trying to say the announcement might be slow, even though the car will be fast.

not sure if joking, for anyone that doesn't know that post is referring to the Boring Company. See Boring Company Home

or check out this screenshot from the video. Gary the snail is literally faster than a tunnel boring machine.

This does not preclude the fact that certain trim lines may be faster than other trim lines across different models... it would be kind of stupid to cap the performance model 3 to 0-60 4.2 seconds just so that it's not faster than the model s.
Quite the contrary, this is a common practice in the auto industry. Porsche hamstrings the Cayman to preserve fastest-car rights to the 911 even though the Cayman is capable of being a faster platform.

The Cayman and 911 are both sports cars so cannibalization is a concern. Also the fastest Cayman is faster than the slowest 911. They even make a Macan quicker than the slowest 911. So that would be consistent with the fastest Model 3 being faster than the slowest Model S.

I work with lots of developers.... none of them WANT to work on the weekend. Certainly not for something as mundane as adding a new config of a car that's already been out for 10 months.
I am a developer, and this work would likely be completed and tested beforehand. All they would need to do would be to push it up to the server. If they have continuous integration set up, it would likely be a one command operation taking seconds to complete.

correct, I was a deployment specialist for a large media corp about 7 years ago.

if you're good at scripting, it's all automated, even the rolling IIS resets after the fresh code is deployed. From the time Elon says "go", it's a 15 minute process, tops, depending on how many web servers you're pushing to.
