In the waning days of his presidency in Kabul, Karzai was smoking a fair amount of hash etc and getting paranoid... spent some time under his desk hiding etc....so paranoid, he started leaving the door to the bathroom open and made his guards stand right outside and occasionally look in.
The bathroom was windowless.

The short answer is because the Energy Department has a special division that, as part of its mission to track and mitigate the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, specializes in the study of biological weapons such as viruses.

Ages ago I was hired to run SW development at a firm where the code stack was like this. Nightmare.
If the code is so bad...
A) Why did it work fine for 15 years?
And
B) Why did Elon pay $44bn for it?
Rewriting everything is the first impulse any software engineer has whenever they're looking at a massive codebase for the first time.
Over time you learn to not assume that every engineer who's worked on the code before you isn't a complete moron who only wrote it that way to impede your genius.
Humility I think is the word for this.

Thought this purchase wouldn't be a distraction from Tesla, though?

Monday’s errant configuration change was at least the sixth high-profile service outage at Twitter this year:- On January 23rd, Android users temporarily couldn’t load new tweets or post them.
- On February 8th, an error message told users that they were “over the daily limit for sending Tweets,” preventing them from posting.
- On February 15th, tweets stopped loading.
- On February 18th, the timeline broke and replies disappeared.
- On March 1st, the timeline stopped working.
The news here isn't that he's firing people - it's the way he's just mocking the person shamelessly and Twitter HR can't even tell the dude whether or not he was actually laid off or not. A combination of pure incompetence (or just completely overwhelmed) by Twitter HR and Elon just being a dick head.
