The issue is when the government uses it to manufacture consent and censor dissenting opinions to the narrative.

No más, Tomás.
The government can't do that. That would be a 1A violation and they could be sued by the company they're trying to compel to suppress speech and they would lose. Remember, the 1A constrains the government.

True for the US govt anyway, but recall that the Russian government used Twitter exactly as you describe in order to fool the masses into voting for Trump.

Andrew Tate arrest: TikTok and Twitter under fire over false posts from fans

Social media firms are under fire this weekend for allowing the spread of misinformation by followers of “king of toxic masculinity” Andrew Tate after his arrest in connection with a human trafficking investigation.

In the hours after his detention, TikTok and Twitter were flooded with posts falsely claiming he had been freed and conspiracy theories saying he had been set up, Observer analysis shows
.
Imran Ahmed, chief executive of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, said: “Having conspiracy theories proliferating which might put at risk the integrity of an investigation or the safety of those involved is unconscionable.”

Fidelity's Blue Chip Growth Fund stake in Twitter was valued at around $8.63 million as of November, according to a monthly disclosure and Fidelity Contrafund notice first reported today by Axios. That's down from $19.66 million as of the end of October.

Macroeconomic trends are likely to blame in part. Stripe took a 28% internal valuation cut in July, while Instacart this week reportedly suffered a 75% cut to its valuation.

But Twitter's wishy-washy policies post-Musk clearly haven't helped matters.

Only because he knows, or his backers know, that Truth Social will crash if he goes back on Twitter. 50/50 chance he gets desperate and goes back on Twitter at some point to feed his grift machine, Truth Social investors be damned.
He’s contractually obligated to Truth Social to a degree, and that is part of his decision making. Not that he ever paid much attention to contracts or legal obligations, but in this case it could cost him cash.

That’s basically my point.

I would like to add that we in the west and especially in Europe have dropped the ball in an epic way in the years leading up to this war.

The dependency on Russian oil and gas, not stepping in much sooner when Russia occupied the Crimea, MH17 -the list goes on. We turned a blind eye in our addiction to fossil fuels and the world would be a different place if we acted sooner.
Point is were faced with an awful war that needs to stop and I ‘get’ Elon’s position -flawed as it might be.

I know but what Ukraine really needs is air power. Problem with western fighter planes is that they require a lot of maintenance which would require NATO presence.

I get that Ukraine can make up its own mind but there’s still something like diplomacy.

Anyway let’s agree that it’s a horrible situation and that we’re all hoping for the best outcome.
I don't believe that people had any illusions about Putin being a thug, yet most people probably considered him to be a rational actor. They didn't expect him to go completely off the rails, just as people probably didn't expect Musk to go off the rails at Twitter.
Anyway, could you kindly point out any major energy exporters with a stable democracy, except for Norway? Prince Bone-Saw perhaps?
We also shouldn't kid ourselves that Russia is being seen as equally bad in many parts of the world, as it is seen here in the West.
Finally, looking at this war cynically, this is the cheapest way of destroying Russian military power and to bleed Russia dry that the US could ever have hoped for. Compared to the Afghanistan fiasco the costs are almost minuscule, no US soldiers die and the brunt of the economic costs have to be borne by Europe (except for Norway, who are making a financial killing).

Remember - there is no reason to believe that Elon's actions on Twitter have any impact on demand since any loss in left leaning buyers will be made up by right leaning ones (or so we have been told).

You should seen the shocked look on my face. It's like if someone told me that there is gambling going on in the casino. Shocked I tell you, shocked.

Um, I see Elon's actions as almost completely demand-destroying.

He's abandoning everything he stood for in the dimensions of saving the planet, and instead championing far-right conspiracy lunatics who appreciate his support but will NEVER buy an electric car. He is NOT making new Tesla sales on the far right - they will still be out there with their diesel half-ton pickups blocking supercharging stations for the joy of it. Meanwhile he's portraying himself as the enemy of just about the entire pro-science, pro-planet crowd who used to be proud to drive a Tesla and are now wishing they could at least re-badge even if the vehicle itself still supports what they believe in.

You'd be better off making the case that the pro-planet crowd will hold their nose over Elon's politics vs thinking the coal-rollers will start driving Model 3's.

Maybe the Casablanca reference was too subtle.

Unfortunately he is also changing the narrative of Tesla to include a CEO "who is also destroying Twitter in realtime after paying $44B."

I think it going to be awhile before TSLA sees a P/E above 50 again.

Techdirt: It Took Just Four Days From Elon Gleefully Admitting He'd Unplugged A Server Rack For Twitter To Have A Major Outage.

By all objective measures, this was not a "major" outage.

1) all mobile users were online (this was a desktop- access only issue) - mobile users constitute the VAST majority of all social media users
2) the outage lasted for a pretty limited time period

Having been on the receiving side of some nasty DDoS's and remembering AWS's 12h+ outages that completely took things like Netflix offline, this one was mild, very mild. So much so, I would likely bet it was due to a code push, and not hardware. When hardware goes offline, you see mobile and desktop users typically affected equally.

I saw this happened in Seattle too. Moving to Texas soon? I don't see how a landlord would want a tenant that did this though unless they paid upfront the rent a year/many months in advance.

Still scummy and if I was an employee, I'd be concerned if I'd even be paid if this is how a company is ran. Don't see how folks can even begin to defend this.

Pretty sure some here would defend it. “Elon needs to be Elon” “waste of money better spent on bringing balance to social media” “4D chess” etc.
If you don’t get a bite here soon, just post it on main investor thread.
They’ll take a moment from writing mash notes to that dogmatic simpleton Ayn Rand.

Won’t defend it but I’m not interested in piling on and lending credence to the revolving door of hit pieces regarding EM and Twitter.

If you care about the stock price and the company, you’ll consider the same and by telling the media and establishment to kick rocks you’re doing yourself and the rest of us investors a favor.
