Found the perfect phone mount

This. I’ve been searching for a magnetic qi charger that will mount with a suction mount, and articulate enough to allow it to attach to the back of the screen, but so far, no luck. Plus, none of the magnetic chargers seem to allow full rotation (landscape). May be a limitation of qi charging, since there are plenty of magnetic holders that allow rotation.

Do you necessarily want it to mount to the screen? (E.g. to put it in your sightline?) What about on a pylon out of the standard location?

@insaneoctane
As for charging, I don't have an elegant solution. Right now, I just dock it below when I'm running low. Historically in other cars, I just bought a cable and had it plugged in to the closest 12V outlet.

I just use a standard lightning cable and plug it into the back of the console and run it between it and the seat and when I need to plug in I reach down to find it and plug in while mounted. This is nice as I can use the phone plugged in as a camera or whatever. Mounted on the magnet base I get pretty good images from the camera:

I just drove that in my Dad's gas car, want to try when I get my 3. Where did you start from? Where did you charge? Topaz Lake (Gardnerville)? Thx

Yes, I came from Las Vegas and really wanted to do the pass, it opened on the 20th, so I drove up 95, charged at Hawthorne and according to Go Anywhere | Tesla I was going to make it to my cabin from there, but as I sat there supercharging the car wanted to go to Gardnerville, ok... I liked that I only had to sit for a few minutes, but then when I got to Gardnerville the car wanted to go to Stateline to charge and not even go over the Sonora Pass! Grrr.

There was no cellular so I didn't have much luck finding alternatives, ended up getting lunch so I could use the wifi in the casino. Decided to just go from there, and it worked fine, but I still think I could have gone straight outta Hawthorne. Next time I am gonna try the Mammoth Lakes Supercharger. I had tons of charge left when I got to my cabin in Sonora. Wish I had remembered that they charge by the minute in NV as topping off the battery cost $12, mostly because I was busy eating lunch, with no cellular, there was no way to communicate to the car and tell it to disconnect.

Magnetic Qi Wireless Charging Suction Mount for Smartphones

This is a new mount, made by XVIDA, that seems to have everything I’ve been looking for in a phone mount:

1. Magnetic, with aligned magnets that lock the phone into the optimal position for charging
2. Fast qi charging
3. Allows rotation to landscape
4. Built in cooling fan
5. Not wobbly

Only problem, is that the arm doesn’t look like it would permit enough range of motion, when attached to the back of the screen, and at $69.00 (and $29 for the magnetic card that attaches to the phone or case) I’m not quite willing to experiment.

I reached out to the company, and got an email back within an hour, on the 4th of July, no less! I explained what many of us are looking for: a way of mounting a phone so that it aligns with the model 3 screen. He said he would talk to their engineers tomorrow, and figure out a solution. Fingers crossed!

I too have been looking and this looks like a winner!

Thanks for contacting the manufacturer for us!

Mark, from XVIDA, tested out the configuration on his desktop monitor, and proved that the mount has the range of motion to achieve what others have with goosenecks.

The theoretical advantages of this system, over earlier solutions, are:

1. Adds fast qi charging. The front USB ports, at 5 volt, 2 amp, should be able to provide more than the 7.5 watts needed by iPhones. For phones that can use more than 10 watts, you’ll still need to route power from the 12V outlet.

2. More stable than a gooseneck.

3. Built in cooling fan. Qi chargers get hot, and so do phones, especially when running apps like navigation. The fan should help optimize charging rates and reduce thermal wear on the phone battery.

4. Magnetic lock automagically locks your phone into the optimal spot for qi charging.

Potential disadvantages:

1. Cost. The charger mount is $69 and it also requires a special case or magnetic card to attach to qi enabled phones. This is not the same as other magnetic chargers that just use a metallic plate, because this system uses magnets on both sides (charger and phone), to enable perfect magnetic alignment.

2. Because the back of the model 3 screen is not perfectly flat, I need to test it to see where it will stick. I want to mount it to the bottom of the screen, in landscape orientation, to better hide the cable, but I may have trouble doing this because of the curvature and also the required clearance for the center console flip lid.

3. Although this mount allows rotation, it will probably be restricted by the edge of the monitor. To get around this, I think you’d probably have to reposition the suction cup, or live with a gap between the phone and screen when in one of the two orientations. You can see in this photo, how the phone wouldn’t have enough clearance to fit in landscape mode, when mounted to the left of the screen:

Maybe it would be possible to bring the mounting plate a little more forward or backward, to permit mounting?

Anyway, fingers crossed. I’ll post results once I get it!

I am also looking forward to printing things for the car.

ABS stinks like crazy and is the plastic that makes 3d printing know for smell. PLA doesn't smell, but also has a lower melting temp. It may get soft in a car in a hot summer day.

In my opinion, for a car, PETG is the way to go -- higher melting temperature and no smell while printing. Just make sure to keep the filament dry. I use this system to keep the filament loaded on my printer from absorbing air moisture: Airtight Filament delivery system (almost) by stephenmhall

Smell or no smell, you might want to think about micro-particulates. My 3D printers live in the garage and have enclosures.

I am going to need a phone mount solution, I fear. First off, the built in connectors really do not allow for much thickness before they become difficult or don't work. Second, I have a non common charging standard (DASH charging) for my fast and low temp charging and if I want to use that then I need to use my own 12v adapter, I can't use the standard USB. Third, my fingerprint reader is at the very bottom of my phone and it makes authentication VERY difficult in the standard bay.... Quite sad. Anyway, I am not sure if I will try this threads suggestion. I would not mount it on the top left side but rather the bottom left side. I have to see. Maybe try to lift it higher in the designated spot (far from ideal)
Why not connect to the cars bluetooth and add the car as a trusted device, so you don't have to authenticate while in the car?

Looks elegant and flows along with the screen. This one is strong enough that it does not wobble. Only problem is that steering wheel covers it a bit.

Thanks for the rec. I picked up a similar mount to the one you listed, and it works perfectly for my iPhone X. It’s positioned perfectly so that FaceID works so I can unlock it easily, and only a small portion of the bottom left corner of the screen is obscured so it’s more than usable for Google Maps navigation to supplement the Tesla nav.
