Ok, this looks promising!
Mark, from XVIDA, tested out the configuration on his desktop monitor, and proved that the mount has the range of motion to achieve what others have with goosenecks.
The theoretical advantages of this system, over earlier solutions, are:
1. Adds fast qi charging. The front USB ports, at 5 volt, 2 amp, should be able to provide more than the 7.5 watts needed by iPhones. For phones that can use more than 10 watts, you’ll still need to route power from the 12V outlet.
2. More stable than a gooseneck.
3. Built in cooling fan. Qi chargers get hot, and so do phones, especially when running apps like navigation. The fan should help optimize charging rates and reduce thermal wear on the phone battery.
4. Magnetic lock automagically locks your phone into the optimal spot for qi charging.
Potential disadvantages:
1. Cost. The charger mount is $69 and it also requires a special case or magnetic card to attach to qi enabled phones. This is not the same as other magnetic chargers that just use a metallic plate, because this system uses magnets on both sides (charger and phone), to enable perfect magnetic alignment.
2. Because the back of the model 3 screen is not perfectly flat, I need to test it to see where it will stick. I want to mount it to the bottom of the screen, in landscape orientation, to better hide the cable, but I may have trouble doing this because of the curvature and also the required clearance for the center console flip lid.
3. Although this mount allows rotation, it will probably be restricted by the edge of the monitor. To get around this, I think you’d probably have to reposition the suction cup, or live with a gap between the phone and screen when in one of the two orientations. You can see in this photo, how the phone wouldn’t have enough clearance to fit in landscape mode, when mounted to the left of the screen:
Maybe it would be possible to bring the mounting plate a little more forward or backward, to permit mounting?
Anyway, fingers crossed. I’ll post results once I get it!
