Why are you checking if your phone is at home and not the car itself?

because:
a) I am the main (only) driver, which means that if car is at home, then phone is at home (I might change that check for more robust one)
b) Tesla's integration in HA is an unnoficial one (Custom), and for some strange reason, it does not report location correctly. Might be due to API changes...

I use the MQTT link into Teslamate and HA is super up to date on what the Tesla is doing. I have automations that require the car to be home as one of the conditions and they work every time.

hmm.. MQTT is used by solar assistant.
when I try to add another MQTT instance, it says that only 1 is allowed. do I miss something here?

I believe you should only have one MQTT broker running. In the Tesla custom integration you can enable MQTT, so it will look for Tesla related data in the MQTT feed.
