Model S Owner and Frustrated Tesla Fan
Thing is, I do this. And I've had credit card applications refused. Many of the banks really don't want people who pay off their bills every month -- the goal is to find people who can be trapped into debt slavery. The unfortunate lesson here is that it's probably best to have a credit card, but use it like cash.
I've also encountered the "MBNA fraud" a couple of times, where the bank pretends not to have received your payment.
For me the main purpose of a credit card as opposed to a debit card is so that if your card number is stolen, it's the bank's problem, not yours. Accordingly, I would never set up auto-payment, which would eliminate that benefit.
My conclusion has been that the major banks are actually operating on a model of debt slavery and fraud, and really want nothing to do with responsible honest borrowers. So it goes.
