HW3 Verification

Is there any way to verify in or on the vehicle that it has HW3?

According to the threads that I have read, it has the VIN that just qualifies for HW3. VIN 336xxx, build date 4/22.

Local sales rep says no HW3 have been produced yet...

According to Elon (probably knows better than your local rep) 4/12 is the date they switched over on the Model 3.

Also, if you're stuck on SW 2019.7.105 as of now, you probably have HW3.

For anyone who purchased in Q1 and was still holding out hope, I've got bad news.

VIN 304XXX SR+ with 3/19 build date. HW 2.5 according to chat. I thought maybe the SR+s built at the end of March would have a chance, but no.

Chat support was able to do it from the VIN online. And I got an answer in 5 minutes.

SR or LR? It seems like Tesla had switched back to the HW2.5 computers sometime mid-May only on the SR pack cars to save on costs. I guess the logic was that SR purchasers were less likely to purchase FSD and therefore less likely to need HW3.

Are you on a weirdo version like 2019.15.10x? My SR+ is manufactured June 19th, HW3 (confirmed via codec) and the "latest" firmware is 2019.15.105. Delivered with 2019.15.103.

Check the format of the TeslaCam videos. HW3 records in h265/HEVC. Older systems record in H264/AVC.

I have HW3 and I just got the update to 2019.28.2 and latest navigation update which I think is 2019.20

Isn't a lot known yet.

As far as we know right now, the only change is the computer module itself. HW3 is the custom FSD chip Tesla has been working towards for years, with Tesla designed neural network accelerators.

The board has two CPUs, each with two accelerators on it, for failsafe/redundancy. It is supposed to be a couple of orders of magnitude faster than HW2.5 at running NNs, and able to handle larger matrices as well.

Right now we have been told it is still running the same networks as HW2.5 cars for Autopilot - hence the similar performance. At some point it'll transition to the new FSD networks they've been developing in the background, which would mean an abrupt change in capabilities (hopefully for the better. )

I believe the only known difference in performance today is the identification method above - the new board includes hardware to encode video more efficiently in a format that didn't exist when HW2.5 was designed, so the TeslaCam videos take less space and (combined with the other board advantages) require a little less energy.

As of now only inferiority to HW2.5. All code is written for 2.5 and 3.0 is likely running in an emulation mode. So there is likely a negative benefit to having 3.0 now. Musk even said that for now 2.5 was better.

Please people stop harrasing chat staff with asking about this. They’re struggling to deal with customers enquiries as it is, imagine if hundreds of people start asking “do I have HW3?”
