J1772 Adapter for Model S

With the J1772, yes. With other adapters, no. For instance if you used a NEMA14-50 adapter on a socket that you knew had only a 30AMP breaker, or was on a shared circuit with another load, then you would need to manually turn down the current level.

Do you know if the amp setting on the charger screen defaults to the previously entered amperage? So once I set it at 24 amps it would stay there until I changed it?

The 4.0 manual says it remembers the location and uses an adjusted value you used at that spot previously.
Roadster is this way. Same thing with once we get a charge timer - it will remember locations you have set a timer and do that by default if you charge at the same place. So that means if you set a charge time at home but are out and want to use a public charger it will begin charging on plug-in and ignore the charge time since you're not at home.
What happens if you don't adjust the current by turning it down?
Normally the breaker will trip and charging will stop. However it the breaker fails to trip the wiring or the breaker/panel could catch on fire.
