I'm pretty certain it is not that. They were running into parts shortages, and if they continued giving one away with every car, they were coming up on a point soon where they wouldn't have any left to deliver with new cars anyway. So to try to head that off and delay that out of stock point, they shifted to not giving one with every car, but only to people who still feel they need them.
“Giving“ one with every car? You mean as in Tesla “gives” us a steering wheel/yoke with every car? I think we well and truly paid for that item. It’s removal simple raises the margin, as would removing the steering wheel/yoke.

Look, they have had no problem repeatedly raising the prices of the cars by THOUSANDS of dollars several times, and why are people not losing their everloving minds about that?! THAT is something that really is about the money. That is very straightforward about getting more money--a lot of it. It is the same thing for a higher price.

This is about a product that they are very crunched for on inventory, and is a tiny amount of money, compared to the very large price increases on the vehicles themselves. So it is delusional and misguided to say that trying to reduce how many of these UMCs they have to give out is about the money. It just isn't. That's an irrelevant side effect, but isn't the purpose of this change.

People are just looking for some conspiracy. I whole heartedly believe the removal of items has only one goal to speed up delivery. They could have increased the price of the car by $200 and no one would have cared. How short sighted are people? No one would refuse a free charger even if you have 10 sitting collecting dust people would ebay them or just throw them in the basement vs not taking one with a car. You have to put a price on something so that people actually don't choose to take one with every car.

They could have given people a credit to not take one. Then it doesn't seem like they're nickel and diming people.

That's very much playing a psychology game. When they have raised prices by multiple thousands of dollars several times in a row, and people never got upset or made a peep of noise about them, why would there be any indication that people would go ballistic and accuse them of being criminals for doing something that costs $200? People are being ridiculously irrational. But you are right in the outcome, that it would have cost Tesla relatively little but kept people from going insane.

If it wasn’t about the money they could have dropped the car price by the price of the (now optional) charger.

It’s about the money.

There are multiple reasons Tesla lowered the price of the Wall Connector while removing the Mobile Connector from being included with the Tesla vehicle.

- Saves Tesla some money. Eliminating the Mobile Connector reduces Tesla's costs for each vehicle.
- Reduces Tesla's supply chain issues for the Mobile Connector components
- Influences Tesla customer behavior to purchase the Wall Connector.

The may be another reason, one that involves demand management for electricity. In Tesla's major markets, i.e. California and a few other regions once electric vehicles reach a critical mass there will need to be ways of managing demand on the grid. If a large percentage of Tesla customers have the Wall Connector installed then an overall program for scheduled charging, demand management can be implemented. Many Tesla owners would sign up for such a plan if they were to receive a rebate or discount for letting Tesla manage the charging schedule. This would be easier to implement as Tesla recommends always leaving the Tesla vehicle plugged in. Your Tesla vehicle will be charged, ready for you to starting driving in the A.M. Tesla could manage the charging start/stop time and perhaps even the charging rate to best align with the capacity of the grid.
