Model 3 A-Pillar Damage [is this totaled?]

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
Looking for peoples opinions, my Model 3 was hit today by a semi turning too sharp in front of me. The A-pillar took a pretty hard hit, along with the windshieldt, front bumper, fender, driver door, rear door and rear quarter panel were all damaged, although the rear door and quarter panel were only scratched. Due to the A-pillar damage, do you think this car will be totaled? It’s a 2019 dual motor long range with 45k for miles.

Ouch. Sorry to hear and see.

Agreed with above. Not even close to being totaled. Will be repaired (eventually) and should look ok - just take a hit on eventual resale or trade-in.

I see a decent amount of repaint, blending, windshield replacement, and depending on how by the book the repair goes, perhaps some upfront body panel welding.

Yowsers... so is it totaled after all? With diminished value + car rental, etc ... seems like that might push it over the line.
I’m waiting to hear back from the insurance company but it sounds like it could be. It would take a month to fix.. so I don’t know if they would want to cover that rental expense. And that’s IF the cost doesn’t increase once they get into the repair.

Since the damage is so minor, you may want to consider a payout. Insurance will send you a check and let you keep the car but you have to re-register it as salvage. This terminates the warranty, eligibility for recall repairs, and might cause hassles with superchargers, but could be worth the bargain.

Slather some bondo on there, get a junkyard mirror and fender and you'll be back on the road for a few grand.

The thought crossed my mind. What are your thoughts on the windshield though? It needs to be replaced and what about calibration? Could any shop do the calibration or would a certified Tesla repair center need to do it? The windshield and possibility to not supercharge would make me think twice about a buy back. First though, I need to figure out the buy back amount. Probably hear back on that in the next business day or two.

I don't believe any manual calibration is required for windshield replacement.
