Model S P100D New Inventory Car arriving with 20% more miles

Hey all,

So, I ordered a new inventory Model S P100D at the end of November and am supposed to take delivery on December 15th. All was going great until I got a call from my Owner Specialist telling me that the car will be arriving with ~1000 additional miles. Basically, when the car was ordered, it was still out as a loaner vehicle and didn't notify the customer that the car had sold. They decide to tell me this 5 days ago - a week before delivery. Of course they apologized and all, but am expecting some sort of compensation for this, which they are working on at this time. What do you all think would be a fair resolution? I asked for Autopilot to be removed as it was rarely used in my S85D and its also double the price now. So, I think if they just added that in free of charge it would be fair. Let me know what you all think.

I was a Tesla delivery specialist for two years and had this happen pretty regularly. I am sad to say that you shouldn't expect much compensation. They might be able to increase the price adjustment to reflect the higher mileage but they will not be able to "throw in" something like autopilot for free. The best I ever saw a customer get in this circumstance was a complimentary 3 year pre-paid service agreement. Its not that the Tesla staff don't want to make things right it is that company policy prohibits big giveaways as goodwill. The best I would hope for is free service and/or a wall connector or maybe a wheel and tire package.

Why would Tesla grant something that costs them
money rather than simply switch on autopilot for the next cost to them of the labour minute to hit a switch? It inherently costs them nothing rather than a wheel tire package no?

That's too bad. I'm still waiting on a response from my Owner Specialist in regards to compensation and ETA (doubtful I'll take delivery on schedule). I'm not really interested in getting pre-paid service anyways since I don't drive too many miles. My current S85D went for service once over the span of 3 years since I drove about 7k miles/year. My alternative request would be to request the service center to install a Carbon Fiber Spoiler. It's kinda ridiculous that a significant number of SP100D inventory cars don't come with the spoiler already installed, as it's standard on cars rolling off the factory. I inquired about having one installed and quoted me $1500...

That was the same idea I had too. Even my Owner Specialist thought that would be a fair solution as they could just simply activate it at delivery and leave my monthly payments how it is. However, the final decision will come from corporate.

They'll probably give you a coffee cup PLUS an umbrella for the added trouble! Jokes :)

I would expect to receive my Tesla-branded gifts regardless of the issues!

As Hank said, 1 dollar per mile adjustment is pretty standard.

True, but the only issue is that I've already submitted my down payment for the lease a while back and am expecting (hoping) to take delivery on Saturday. I believe if there's a price adjustment, they would need to void the lease terms. That's why they ask customers to make changes before submitting a downpayment. I could be wrong though. Also, if they need to update the lease terms, it could delay delivery... Funny part is, it will probably be delayed already...

Advice ..don’t taken delivery until now this is worked out. You won’t get anything after the fact.
That’s classic Tesla Corp!

Because the cost to them is more than switching on Autopilot. They have sunk development costs that continue to accumulate for Autopilot and they recover these costs, which I am assuming they are capitalizing through sale of the solution. Their cost if they give it away is the price of the item, not simply the cost to implement the solution.

Very true, they can turn on anything in 5 minutes. They are loading a totally standard sw package.
Good luck.
They dont care a hoot about good Karma, zero. As long as they thousands of back orders, they laugh at us.
Remember, there is ZERO competition, zero.
Take it or leave it. Is their motto.

So just got off the phone with the manager. Similar to what @jonm93 said, they really couldn't do much... and autopilot definitely seemed a bit of a reach. They offered me a $250 price adjustment and $500 service credit, which is kind of BS. I was expecting a higher price adjustment. Aside from that, they are organizing a due bill to have the carbon fiber spoiler installed on the car, as all new SP100D are eligible for it. Let me know if you all think this was a fair solution, or if I should escalate it.

I completely agree. It really is just pushing a software update to the car. But i really didn't take into consideration the costs that went in to developing the system. Makes sense. Yes, there isn't any competition at this time, but when someone buys a six figure luxury sedan and issues occur, I would expect better communication and solutions in regards to an issue on their end...

$250 seems low. And even though you’re not getting the tax credit personally, it’s rolled into the lease so the lease amount may change next year.

If you threaten to walk away, I’m sure they would change their tune.
