On the Tesla side there's nothing to install--- it just uses the wifi already built into the car

You do have to pay My Q (not Tesla) for a subscription to use it though.

It's $45 for 1 year, $179 for 5, $299 for 10.

IIRC I had to download an app. No?

Setting it up wasn’t ‘plug in play’, it took a couple of attempts before it worked.

There was a free period before I had to pay. Maybe 30 days?

yes- all covered at the link I mention including the 30 day trial-- the app is on your phone though not your car... you then pair your phone with your garage using that app... then pair your car with your garage (using the native tesla SW)

From my experience HomeLink is more reliable than MyQ
True as MyQ needs WiFi in the house and an internet connection in the car to function. However, the 10-year plan is still cheaper than HomeLink and will outlast your current car; it can then be used with your next car. I went with the $45 one-year plan as a test and the wall unit was free. It is nice that MyQ tells you if you left the garage door open. I have a second unit on my second garage door so I can monitor it as well.

It works the vast majority of the time for me. I do have a hand held remote in the glove box, just in case. At this point I will likely opt for the 10-year plan when I am up for renewal.

I dont understand why MyQ requires a subscription and costs money, the android/ios mobile app is completely free and it presumably uses the same APIs. I guess because they can is probably the answer. I have the app and a fob, but I don't need/want the automatic open on pull in, so it works fine for me.

They are just trying to cover their infrastructure costs. I agree its dumb but I can't blame them for the small amount they are charging. Buying that garage door controller 20 years ago (Huge exaggeration on the years) doesn't cover the cost of AWS today.

I have an Aladdin setup on my Genie garage door opener, and it works perfectly. No extra charges and it’s perfectly compatible with the Tesla system. It has an app, so I can control the garage door remotely, with or without the car nearby. Between the Genie / Aladdin system and Homelink garage door operation is a breeze.

Works flawlessly until it doesn’t. My car had been sitting near my garage outdoors, on the edge of the geofence border. When I climbed in to back it into the garage, it must have sent a close signal. As it often does (in my experience) it sometimes takes 15 or 20 seconds to connect. In this case that was just enough delay for the close cycle to start as the car entered the garage. Had I been head first I would’ve seen what was happening. A perfect storm setup by the fact that the app doesn’t actually know where you are. It decides whether you are coming or going and takes action.

DON’T SET TO AUTO-CLOSE. It closed on my one month old MY yesterday while backing into the garage. This capability is not ready for prime time, and like FSD may do the wrong thing at the worst time.
You need to set it to auto-close when a certain distance away from the GPS spot you indicate. It works very well.

A couple of reasons I do not use auto close:

  • I want to visually verify the area is clear
  • With auto close there is a tendency to just leave, I always visually verify the door has closed
  • When I back the car out of the garage, such as to move trash cans, I really don’t want it to close
MyQ’s hub comes with a sensor you put on the door that will tell you when the garage is opened or closed.

You need to specify a GPS location and then set it to auto-close/open when a certain distance from it. It won’t auto-close if you’re in the garage that way.

That setting was in place and is the reason why the door closed when the car was moved. The situation was the car was parked outside the garage for a period of time and then it was moved. The place where the car was parked was obviously and unknowingly at the set distance to send the close signal. Only problem is that in this situation I was moving to the garage, not away.
My purpose in making this post is to warn that there is a learning curve, and in the end, auto close can end badly in my situation and others mentioned here. Use at your own risk. I never could have imagined the situation that resulted in the door landing on my car.

Point to consider, have you ever noticed when you tell the garage to close it pauses for about 7-seconds while it flashes a white light and makes a loud sound (if you have not removed the speaker) before it initiates a door close? This occurs when the car does not have a good GPS lock / location (confirmed with MqQ). In this case, if you have auto close enabled, and the car does not have a good lock, when you leave the car will not send a garage close command until it has a good lock (location) and you are beyond the distance you set. So you could be “down the road” before the garage starts to closes.

If you use Auto Close it is best to keep an eye on the garage to ensure it closes.
