Newbie Question--Upgrading AP2/AP2 Enhanced Autopilot to Full Self Driving

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it when I searched the site...

I'm looking at Inventory MS P100D's and the selection is pretty thin right now for models with Full Self Driving capability. I do see a few cars with AP2/AP2 Enhanced available. Would these cars be able to be upgraded to full self driving by paying the extra $4k when I purchase or lease?

Thanks in advance.

To expand on the process, if you don't choose one with FSD included, once the car shows up in your 'My Tesla' page, the option to upgrade to FSD will be there and you can add it at any time (along with any other options that are available 'after original sale').

I just went through the same thing. You just have to let your delivery specialist or sale person know if you want to change a HW 2 car to enhanced autopilot or full self driving, and then it is updates on your motor vehicle purchase agreement and spec sheet. I debated for a few days whether to add it. If you do it ahead of time you save $1000 on each if done prior to delivery if the vehicle doesn't already have it. I figured I was going to add them ultimately, so better to save the money, which works unless they drop the price with Model 3 rollout.

As for your last sentence, I would be very surprised if the EAP and FSD software prices aren't cut for all cars after Model 3 is available. Whether it happens as soon as Model 3 configurator opens is another matter. Of course someone buying now is in a bit of a pickle lest they gamble and wait for a price lower than $5000/$3000. They of course could end up paying $6000/$4000 if their gamble fails. Tough choice.

I see at least 37 P100D cars listed here: Tesla Inventory Search . Of those 37 cars, 20 of them already have Full Self Driving enabled.

Since all cars built since October 2016 have the AP2 hardware, any of them can have Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self Driving enabled after purchase if it isn't already included.

Sorry, I should have also included that I'm looking for the black headliner and prefer 19 inch wheels. Once I start trying to narrow down to preferred options and colors, the list of available cars with FSD drops quickly. But as long as I can upgrade at time of purchase, then I have quite a few more to choose from!

Thanks for your help, everyone!

You maybe be totally aware of this already, but feel like someone should say it out loud to someone new doing some Tesla shopping: As of right this moment, there are no cars with Full Self Driving capability. At this point in time, there is literally no difference between a car with Full Self Driving enabled and one without. Not only is the hardware identical, but at this stage, the software hasn't developed to the point where there is any functional difference between a car with FSD and an AP2 car without FSD. None.

Clearly the expectation is that those who purchase FSD will see some (and eventually, a lot of) additional functionality, and this site is chock-full of speculation about what that will be and when it will arrive. It also has lots of good thoughts about whether it makes sense (or not) to purchase the upgrade at this stage as a hedge against a potentially higher price later.

As long as you're aware that paying for a car with FSD (or paying to upgrade) will result in receiving a literally identical car with literally identical features/functions as an AP2 car without FSD (for now), carry on with your shopping- and good luck!

We bought a CPO and decided to wait off on turning on the feature. I figure I can make a $1000 from owning stock then to give it up now. (Wishful thinking) . Plus what if that feature can never work because it needs additional hardware. So we skipped it and have Enhanced AP2. I know some are saying they could jack up the price, but I would think that we could complain that we were told a specific price to upgrade when it becomes fully functional. And honestly? They've dropped the price of the car since we bought and they've added more cameras. At this point, we should get it for free! :)

Thanks for the tips, everyone!

I pulled the trigger on a 2016 Silver/Black Inventory P100D with Enhanced Autopilot. I upgraded to FSD at $3k so I could roll it into lease payments. It is pretty much my desired build except for the 21 inch wheels, but I couldn't argue with the $19.1k showroom discount. Should be here in two weeks. Can't wait!
Congratulations, you will love it!

Ok, so it's been almost a week since I signed the paperwork. I spoke to the sales advisor on Tuesday and he could not give me an ETA for the car's arrival. Going into the holiday weekend, I'm not confident that I am going to be getting the car in the next day or two.

Other than harassing the folks at my local store, is there any other way I can find out where my car might be located right now?

A bit of patience! It was going to take about 2 weeks to take delivery of an inventory car for me, but they ended up pulling it ahead so a little over a week. If they have your car ready they would tell you since they have a financial incentive to sell you the car!

“No news is no news” is my delivery motto. It gets really frustrating at times because of how excited you are for the car. But one day you’ll look back and laugh, just like I did for both of my deliveries.

I paid for FSD ... in the hindsight, I wish I didn't. Based on my experience on how autosteer rolled out in the last 6 months, I think it will take Tesla another two years to get FSD working, assuming the HW2 is good enough. Then again, with Tesla been valued so high, the company might have enough $ to hire the best software engineers and management team and paid them well so they can get FSD working soon enough.

I personally think the rollout is picking up steam in terms of how quick and how meaningful the monthly enhancements are.

I expect it won’t be long before FSD starts having some features, such as TACC that works at stop signs / red lights, or even restricted hands off the wheel situations like easy freeway driving or traffic jams like what Audi will be introducing soon.

If it makes you feel any better, I guarantee the after market activation price for FSD will go up once the package starts offering desirable features. Unless you’re on a lease and strongly believe the feature will not arrive in any useful capacity for 3 years, I don’t think you made a mistake prepurchasing it.

I know with a lease you only end up paying about 40% of the cost of the option, but considering the term of the lease is 3 years, and the likelihood that you will need to wait probably 2 years for any meaningful FSD functionality, I think it's just better all around to wait for your next lease before adding this option.

I think it depends on what you mean by meaningful FSD functionality. Tesla went from the APE box not even booting up or doing anything to delivering close-to-AP1 functionality in around 6 months. While I agree that if you want hands-off start to finish driving, that's probably 2 years away, I feel like other functionality is probably not too far away. Considering they are collecting video clips particularly around traffic signs and stop lights, I would imagine some of the lesser functionality I described will likely be rolling out before the end of the year.

But if that isn't meaningful, certainly, I would probably hold off. It's way more of a dilemma with a lease because if Tesla pulls off a miracle, you're gonna have an agonizing last year of your lease -- even without any price increase you'll effectively be paying over double by waiting, and that only buys the feature for a small fraction of the remaining time with your car.

I just see them having a hard enough time fully replicating the stability of Mobileye's AP1. Already 5 months past original promises in that regard. And FSD has so many challenges, bad lane lines, road construction and barriers, recognizing human traffic control officers and following their commands instead of traffic lights/signs, regulatory approval... Considering how behind Tesla is on AP2, I really think FSD, at least anything worth spending extra money on, is much further away than many here hope. Just my two cents.....

I totally agree with what you're saying. Truly FSD is hugely challenging and I think it'll be more than a year away, and probably two years in the most optimistic scenario.

I'm just asking what things added to the FSD package would tip you over the scale of wanting to spend $3000 up front or $4000 afterwards? What if they bumped the Hold Steering Wheel interval to 5-10 minutes on simple freeways and never (fully hands off) in stop and go traffic with lead cars? What if they added "get out of your car and AutoPark"? What if TACC understood stop signs / red lights and limit lines on the road, and automatically came to a stop (there are already cars coming on the market that do this as a part of ACC)? What if TACC could be engaged at a red light and it automatically accelerated for you once the light turns green?

Those things are much much simpler to accomplish compared to FSD, but they are also beyond the advertised features of EAP. Some people may find those features alone to be worth $3000 considering how expensive the EAP package (and the car) is.

That's my 2c playing devil's advocate for pre-purchasing FSD.

Agreed a lot of those things sound appealing, except get out of your car and auto park. It'll take a long time for me to trust that one :)
