NH owners taking delivery from Mt. Kisco

I received an email from a delivery specialist based in Vegas last night that stated "This email means that your car is built, and we are ready start discussing the final steps for your delivery" and specified a delivery center of Mt.Kisco, New York.

I'm wondering for folks who are in NH and have taken delivery or are soon to take delivery, did you decide to take delivery @ home vs driving to Mt. Kisco?

I'm trying to decide which is better since Mt. Kisco is logistically challenging for me to get to. I've been reading through the forums and see that there have been issues in the past for NH folks taking delivery in NY so I'm wondering how they are doing with logistics more recently.

Some questions I've got about recent deliveries.

If you took delivery @ home:
1) How much of a delay in the delivery date was it vs driving to NY to pick it up
2) When did you get the paperwork for the car vs when receiving the car or sending them final payment?

If you drove to NY:
2) Did Tesla cover a one way rental or overnight lodging?
3) How was sales tax handled? Currently my order page shows tax of $3700 and wants me to agree that I will pay that tax
4) How did you handle temp plates? Were they from NY or did you have to bring them with you?

TIA,
John

I can't believe they are still screwing up the sales tax on NY deliveries to NH residents. DO NOT PAY NY TAX! This is why you are picking up in NY, not MA. MA requires non-residents to pay MA sales tax on MA deliveries. There is no such rule in NY.

I believe they give a NY temp plate. If you can get a signed bill of sale, you can get a 20-day NH temp without the title. I don't know if towns can give a NH temp, or if you need to go to the DMV.

The Newport DMV would not give me a temp, as the bill of sale I got from Tesla was not signed. My S was delivered to my house; I went to town hall to register.

The NH Man said:
Private Sale 20-Day Temporary Plate

Pursuant to RSA 261:57, if a New Hampshire resident purchases a vehicle through a private sale, the purchaser may obtain a 20-day registration plate from any DMV office. The fee is $10.00, and the purchaser is required to provide proof of identity and a bill of sale which includes the legal names and addresses of both the buyer and the seller, signatures of the buyer and seller, the Vehicle Identification Number, and a brief description of the vehicle, (make, model etc.). If someone other than the purchaser comes in to obtain the 20-day registration plate, a notarized letter from the purchaser authorizing the third party to obtain the plate on behalf of the purchaser is required. The third party must provide proof of identity. Please note that 20-day temporary plates are not issued to residents of the State of Massachusetts as temporary plates are not recognized in that state.

There's also a transit plate, but the wording of a temporary seemed to fit better.

I live in NH and picked up in Mt. Kisco. I flew from BOS to LGA (JetBlue had a cheap sale) and then took a train from the city to Mt. Kisco. I would recommend picking it up in person so that if there is an issue you can have them identify it and fix it (or reject delivery) rather than having a delivery company bring it to your house. If a delivery has an issue, it is a lot harder to get Tesla to fix it than it is when the car is sitting on their lot.

So your ISA (or whatever they are called these days) messed up. You DO NOT pay NY sales tax. You need to fill out a NYS DTF-820, Certificate of Nonresidency of New York State and/or Local Taxing Jurisdiction. This is the form that allows Tesla to get away with not charging you any sales tax. You affirm that you live out of state, will not register it in NY, and have no tax nexus in NY. You return that to Tesla and they will update your MVPA to remove the tax. They should have provided that to you when they set up this order, however a friendly reminder to them should get this sorted out. I would not pay anything until they send you an updated MVPA that shows the tax as removed.

I did get a 20 day transit permit from my local town in NH. Cost was $10. Tesla told me that I would NOT get a temp plate from NY, however when I arrived in Mt. Kisco they had a 60 day temp plate ready for me. I would recommend coming with the 20 day NH plate - it's $10 and worth the piece of mind in case Tesla NY messes it up.

Any other questions let me know.

I live in CT and am scheduled to pick up in Mt. Kisco. I am wary of paying full price in advance for a car that may not be there. So I am holding back on paying online by direct deposit.
1. I was told on the phone via salesperson in dealership I could pay full amount by personal check. Can you verify this?
2. Can you give me the name of the delivery expert you dealt with in Mt. Kisco?

Thanks.

I came to NY with two checks - one from my lender for the amount I financed and one cashiers check from my personal bank for the remainder (or down payment, if you will). They accepted both without any problem. What is funny is the check from my lender was made out to Tesla Motors of Massachusetts which is the name that appeared on my MVPA in advance, however the NY group had no issue taking the check made out to Tesla of MA.

The ISA I dealt with was a nice guy named Cris who was based in Vegas and only dealt with home deliveries. He was super well versed in what was necessary for those of us in New England who pick up in NY.
