Update:
Got a call from a Tesla delivery service rep today. My Model 3 is finished with production and being placed on rail to be delivered to distribution center in Alabama. From there it'll be delivered by truck to the Raleigh Service Center.
They said it can take anywhere from 10-15 days or sooner (depending on weather) to get the cars from Fremont to Alabama. Once in Alabama, they'll be able to give me a delivery date and can't before then.
Sounds like a lot of people's cars on this train for quarter-end east coast deliveries.

There have been reports that some cars are sitting at Tesla stores for > 1wk without delivery. Is it possible that Tesla is sending out cars to stores because they don't have enough parking at Fremont factory? The cars were shipped before Tesla sent out invitations to customers in those locations, so Tesla doesn't know exactly who will configure and what wheel size to use? Maybe the recent batch of configurations had a larger % of 18" wheels then Tesla anticipated, so some cars are sitting in Tesla stores waiting for Tesla to also ship some 18" wheels to them and then assign to customer? This could explain why we're seeing older VINs still being assigned.
There may be some truth to this speculation.
In addition to obsessively refreshing my Tesla Account to look for VIN assignment, I also have been stopping by the Indianapolis, IN Tesla service center every time I am in the area over the past few weeks. There has been a Silver Metallic/Aero Model 3's and a Silver Metallic/Sport Wheels (both built "2/2018", VINs in the high 5900's or low 6000s) sitting in their lot for two weeks. There has also been a White/Aero in their lot for over a week, but I see a White/Aero person with a delivery date of March 23 on the Model 3 Invite Spreadsheet (so maybe that is his Model 3)?. In the same 2 weeks, I have seen a Black/Aero, a Silver Metallic/Aero, and two MSM/Aero's come and go. But those 2 Silver Metallic Model 3s are just sitting there. I can't imagine anyone waiting 2 unnecessary weeks for delivery when their Model 3 is already in town.
NOTE: One of the Silver Metallic Model 3's had a sheet in the back seat that said something like "Waiting on Repair" (but then that sheet was gone a few days later). I fully intend to ask my delivery specialist if anything on the Model 3 was repaired before I take delivery.
P.S. - I am just astounded that they are shipping all the Model 3's without any paint protection wrap on the front ends or rear bumpers. Even cheap ICE cars are shipped with paint protection wrap all over it seems.
You should be very careful about paying before taking delivery. A lot of people reporting serious problems with the car when they finally actually see it. You dont want to pay and then find out it needs to be in service for another two weeks. Download the M3 Delivery Checklist - and bring that and your check to the delivery center.Received VIN (79xx) on 3/2

Finally spoke to my Service Advisor for my upcoming Model 3. Said my delay is because white is a very popular color and they make these car in batches. Not sure why you just don't make more white if it's so popular.
Anyways, approaching 38 days since configuring with No VIN
I wonder if that's even true... according to the tracker the breakdown for color is
Black:13.6%
Silver: 6.5%
Red: 18.2%
White: 18%
Blue: 23.2%
Midnight Silver: 20.5%
Granted, the tracker might not be a completely accurate model, but I'd have to assume it's a big enough sample size to be generally reflective of the actual customer base.
Maybe it's something weird like there was an issue with the white paint? It's clear they are batch producing, but the excuse that white is popular is inaccurate. Who knows... I however sympathize. Ordered white on 2/15. Radio silence, no VIN.
