November / Late November delivery (2013) VINs?

No, there's no risk from providing the last 5 numbers. I wish people wouldn't X digits out because then the info isn't as useful as it could be.

There was a scam a few years ago where people would submit early tax returns for the tax credit. Then when the real owner submitted his tax return, it was reflected since the VIZn was already used.

I'm not sure if that is still happening, or if they've changed the verification process.

I think only the production number is unique, the rest is manufacturerer ID info. I could be wrong.

I'd rather not give my VIN, which combined with my city and, with probably not too much sluthing, my real name, could be enough for someone to run the scam.

OHHHH liuping. I just had a nasty thought after reading your note.

Are the VINs unique enough to indicate European delivery so that scammers cannot list them on USA-based tax returns? Is this a possible new scam that may occur this year? I hope that only USA-delivered cars can be booked for tax credits here in the USA.

There's at least one "digit" different between the NA and the European VINs.

Just got a call from my new best friend, "Drew the Delivery Specialist"!!! My P85 comes off the production line on the 18th of Nov and the delivery date in Orange county is the 26th. But I'm thinking of taking delivery in Fremont and doing the "Factory Tour-Pick Up your New Tesla-Drive it Home" program instead. Drew is checking on what dates and times are available at the factory.

My only apprehension is taking a brand new car on a 300 mile road trip with the wife and then having something go wrong.

To give you a little background information, I once did a factory delivery on a new Porsche 911. When we left Stuttgart we had planned to drive thru the Black Forest and find small hotel or "Gasthaus" somewhere along the way and spend the night. We didn't pre book a room because we weren't sure how far we would travel and didn't want to feel rushed to get anywhere. What we didn't realize was that weekend was a German national holiday. Every Inn and hotel we stopped at was booked. Finally after driving for about 9 hours we crossed into Switzerland and found a room. My wife was a pretty good sport about the whole thing but she did let me know as much as I might have wanted to, we weren't spending the night in my new 911.

So if I do this road trip I want to make sure it goes well and there isn't any "range anxiety" involved.

Do I take safe and boring I-5 or travel the more scenic Hwy 101?

I am doing the same thing...it looks like 101 after Buellton into LA can be sketchy..so i'm taking the 5 back down.

If there was a supercharger in Camarillo area i'd head down the 101 for sure!

Don't even worry about it--do it--101 style.

You'll be just fine, especially in CA. Gotta drive that bad boy with 21" down the 101 home to SoCal

You have good taste with the blue P85.

Fun fact, in 1986 I learned you cannot land the space shuttle in White Plains, NY. (source: Space Camp the movie)
I wanted to go to Space Camp sooooo bad. But the movie was enough to get me into the aerospace field. Moral of the story: Everything I learned, I learned from TV and movies.

DEFINITELY do the factory tour.
