    BMW F80 M3 v Model 3 Performance--From Someone that Owns Both

Well, as I allude in my review up top, neither the BMW nor the Tesla is the equal of a true sports car when it comes to handling and feel. My other, other car is a 987 Boxster S, and the steering feel on that car is intense compared to the BMW and Tesla; it also handles significantly better, in...

    BMW F80 M3 v Model 3 Performance--From Someone that Owns Both

I'm maybe not being clear about this--the key fobs on our other cars do not fail. They don't have to be held up to anything. They just work. So, I'm not comparing a key card to a key fob in terms of ease of access in your purse; I'm saying that if Tesla had just used a key fob (like they did...

    BMW F80 M3 v Model 3 Performance--From Someone that Owns Both

You might be able to do this. My wife cannot, because her wallet isn't small enough to do what you're suggesting. I suppose she could buy a different wallet? But then she'd have to alter some other part of her lifestyle to accommodate the car. Her point is that she literally never has...

    BMW F80 M3 v Model 3 Performance--From Someone that Owns Both

The key card is suboptimal because when the car asks for it, you have to dig it out of your wallet (or wallet and purse, if you carry one), tap it against the door, and then tap it again against the center console. It's harder to use in that sense than even a traditional metal key, because it...

    Model S Compact Spare

Space saver spare for Tesla Model S; consists of steel wheel from BMW X5 and hard to find T155 80 18 tire. Matches outer diameter of Tesla wheels, bolts up, works fine. Winter tire recommendations

For what it's worth, I used 19" wheels and 245/45 19 Dunlop 3Ds on both of my Model Ss and never had any trouble; one came from the factory with 19" wheels (it was an S85), and the other came from the factory with staggered 21s (it was a P85+), and both were fine on the 19 inch set. No problems...

    Supercharger - Newark, DE

Yeah, Newark was busy today, too, when we went through about 3:30. On the other hand, the Supercharger at the Royal Farms near the Chesapeake Bay was basically empty about an hour later. Related: taking 301 instead of 95 was clearly the right call.

Model 3 Key Fob is here: $150

The sleeves are a good solution (though they eventually stretch out, in my experience). It's also easy to use a small zip tie to create a loop that you can put a key ring through.

Model 3 Key Fob is here: $150

Blah have been anxiously waiting on this and now of course it is sold out. Lame. It would be nice if there were some sort of wait list or ability to order even when sold out, so I don't have to keep trying and coming back. This is so dumb.

    Key Fob To The Rescue?

Yes, I was expecting that, though. Frankly, that's fine with me--I will probably only want one, anyway. For whatever reason my phone seems to work fine. It's my wife's phone that isn't very reliable.

    Key Fob To The Rescue?

  23. JST

Took my P3D+ autocrossing. Here's what happened:

One of my autocross friends noted that the Model 3 has been classed in DS, which seems like the right class for the RWD car but is probably not the right class for the Performance car. As of right now, the SCCA rules don't distinguish or exclude the AWD cars from the DS classing. The Model...

    Key Fob To The Rescue?

+1 on something just working 100 percent of the time. For something like a car key, the proper tech paradigm is the old, pre-breakup phone system: 5 nines reliability. Even if it works 95 percent of the time, that’s not good enough. How many single incidents of standing outside the car not...

    Key Fob To The Rescue?

Maybe you can come to my house and tell my spouse that the reason she can’t reliably drive our fancy new car is user error? Her phone is linked to the car, and in theory the car should recognize it. Sometimes it does. Sometimes...it just doesn’t. Pulling the phone out and futzing with the...

Less than 48 hrs before delivery, no MVPA

Picked up the car yesterday. Less than 48 hrs before delivery, no MVPA

I got the MVPA but had to make a change to it in order to make it match my 3rd party financing. That seems to have screwed everything up. Not clear whether I'll get the revised MVPA in time. Haven't been able to get IDA on the phone.

    VA safety inspection fun

The sticker location change is welcome in most cars, as it's less obtrusive in the lower left than in the middle. What's annoying is that on one of my cars there's a couple of months gap between the new property tax decal (ugh) and the renewal of the inspection sticker, so right now the former...

Will the AWD Model 3 Need Snow Tires?

I think any answer to this question depends on where you live. In my experience, all seasons work fine in the cold weather and are ok in light snow. What others have said about braking is of course true, but the tradeoff with real winter tires is that they are terrible when the weather warms...

    Fairfax County property tax appeal

I mean, if you want to get technical, you owe VA property tax if you *garage* the car in VA, whether or not you register it in VA. I got an assessment when I worked here over the summer, even though my car had Michigan tags. As a practical matter, you can probably avoid VA car tax if you park...

Why do people purchase CPO vehicles?

In my case, I didn't want the autopilot hardware. I have no interest at all in having a car that drives itself. I don't think I've used even normal cruise control in 20+ years. I also wanted RWD, and the bigger battery, and as much power as I could get. Since they don't make the P85+...

What's the hot ticket (if there is one) for P85+ tires? I have a flat in the rear and am not sure if I'll need a new tire. Looks like Pilot SuperSports are available in 265/35 21 now, though they are back-ordered. Don't want to give up too much grip, though I wouldn't be sad about a little...

    P85 vs P85+ Driving Differences

The price difference for the + when I was buying my new car back in 2013 was just crazy, in part because of the mandatory air suspension and 21" wheels, neither of which I planned to get. On the CPO market the delta is a lot more reasonable (or at least it was when I bought my new-to-me CPO...

    Jefferson Hotel, Richmond (Dest Charger)

Just a quick shout-out for The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, which has two Tesla HPWCs for guest charging. Valets handled the car and dealt with the car with no issue. It was nice to wake up to a fully charged car and not have to stop in Glen Allen or Woodbridge on the way back to DC. Also...

Talk me into 100A wiring vs 50A wiring

I had a similar thought process when I installed the wiring for my car several years ago. At the time I didn't even plan to put in a HPWC, just a NEMA 14-50, so why do anything more than 50 amps? Especially because I didn't get the dual chargers (that was the upgrade at the time). But, in...

    BMW i3

Not sure, honestly--it was a BMW test drive event, and I didn't see the spec sheet. It was ok in a straight line, but not hugely remarkable. Same surge of torque right off the line as the Model S, just less of it and a much more dramatic fall off as speed increased. It was really in the turns...

    BMW i3

I had a chance to test drive an i3 a few weeks ago. It was not that impressive. I've had half a dozen BMWs over the years, and always appreciated their dynamics, but the i3 is missing all of that. It's slightly more entertaining than a base FWD ICE economy hatch, but not much. Plus it looks...

I've never liked the BMW jacks, though I haven't seen the one for the X5. Autozone and so on sell generic scissor jacks with load ratings high enough for the Model S. I just went with one of those.
