Octopus Energy Saving Sessions

Does anyone know how the Octopus ”Power Hour” energy saving sessions are actually calculated?

I’ve taken part in all of them, but the results just seem totally random.

I’ve had sessions where we’ve switched off as much as we can and gone out, only to be told that we didn’t manage to save anything.

Some sessions, we’ve made very small savings, Including one where virtually everything was switched off and the whole family was in another country.

One session I forgot it was happening despite signing up, only to be told I’d managed to save 93% of my normal usage and be credited with over £16 off!

I’ll continue to sign up for them and don’t really do it expecting to save much as we are already quite energy efficient. It all just seems so random.

A blistering 157 MW and 161 MW procured. Starting to wonder if they’ll ask people to do this without reward at all.

[Settled figures come after the event] - or £1.89/kWh reward as I made it.

Breaking news - It’s going to be £1.75/kWh! (with Octopus only taking 7.6% cut this time)

It takes little to get me delaying a roast by half a hour or swapping meals between days so the roast is tomorrow.

Home Assistant is, but that's not one of the settings you can currently control on a PW with HA, just as you can't set tariffs nor time slots. Indeed the only control you have via HA is to go off grid, and to change the mode from self-powered to time based.
Well, you can use HA to automatically join saving sessions and receive notification on the phone that this has happened...

You can use the Tesla Custom Integration by alandtse to switch between “Solar” and “Everything” in the export settings.

I have the skills to automate mine actually but opted not to - to ensure sufficient manual control to handle atypical situations such as being delayed arriving home due to traffic and remote controlling afternoon export based on the in-day happenings with DFS and pricing announcements.

Essential to set phone event reminders to make critical changes to modes and pricing to get the desired behaviour.

Our Powerwalls only export when I change the tariff to reflect the higher rate given during the savings sessions. Not sure HA can change the tariff?
You can preset the tariff for peak so that it exports your solar so that when you toggle "everything" it automatically exports from the battery.

Its fairly straight forward in that respect on that basis unless 1- you have the need to consume solar 2- export rates change to a less favourable rate.

Yes I think you’re correct, so probably couldn’t fully automate for a saving session.

I manually set my PW to “Export Everything” every night before I go to sleep so it exports any excess kWh and then HA switches it back to “Solar” after 23:30 so it’s ready for the next day.

Forgot to set my Powerwall to "Export everything". 🤦🏻‍♂️

Oh, well. Perhaps next time...
Hang on, are you telling me that selling my power to Octopus would have been seen as me making a saving in a saving session? I was told by octopus "there is no easy way for solar/battery customers to earn reward from a saving session" - that said, now the reward is vouchers to buy merch that you could get for free before*, I'm not so fussed.

*I have a large Constantine plush that was sent to me FOC back along, and it priced at £16 (or however many octopoints that is)

You were misinformed by that Octopus rep.

You can still exchange the points for credit in your energy account.
