Can you remove any of the "leaves" so you can work under the car? Or is its design only you can park one on top of the other?

yes, the center sections are optional and removable so you could work under the car....
Having spent way too much time researching lifts, the first question a potential buyer needs to ask him/herself is "Is my main use case parking a car, or working on a car?" If the former, you want a parking/wheel lift like this one (ie, ramps that you drive on). The latter, you want a frame lift (arms that swing in and lift the car from the frame/unibody).

Drive on/parking lifts are easiest and fastest for parking (drive on and lift, vs get out, align the arms, reposition the car and repeat), but not great for any work requiring removing the wheels (snow tire changeover, brake/suspension work, etc). You can make the "wrong lift" work, but it's best to get the right tool for the job.

Anyone who is seriously thinking about a lift should check out the forums at garagejournal.com

yea, these are primarily storage lifts. You can do light work like oil changes and exhaust work, but not much more.
