Opinion: Bottleneck won't just be parts or production

I never did meet the "delivery specialist" on my CPO delivery. The car was trucked to my side of the mountains and I had the truck drivers deliver it to the local library because it had a parking lot big enough for a full size semi to offload the car (on a lift), something not common in a tiny town in the mountains. The truck drivers didn't want to tackle the mountain roads leading to my neighborhood; we negotiated the delivery spot by phone.

I'd never even sat in a Tesla before but learned how to drive it from online videos. Doing the paperwork online and by FedEx was fairly convenient.

That's pretty cool actually. In a perfect world I'd have the car delivered and never do anything in-person but since I live under an hour from the factory I'll just pick it up there.

Cool thanks for the mod on title, makes good sense. It appears many believe delivery process has been quite smooth and don't expect it to be a major issue for Model 3. Hopefully that's the case. I am still concerned with the volume change and the number of people they have at stores.

Let's all hope production ramps up and other things go smoother as well.

Would 5-minute be enough to understand howto drive a new car, in particular with Auto Pilot?

That's the reason why when he mentioned having a video for owners to watch, so the staff don't have to go through everything with the owner.
The car has a 15" screen. They could have an tutorial inside the car. They could probably make it interactive for the non-driving controls.

There isn't that much you need to know and a lot of the essentials can be discovered just sitting in the car.

Sidenotes:
- When we test drove our Volt, the car was brought over and we were handed the fob; nobody had to explain anything to us.
- my 2010 Prius came with an instructional DVD.

I think the longest part of the delivery process was me going through my TMC delivery checklist :) The two delivery folks working with us got a kick out of it and brought us a bunch of swag. But that was over three years ago and obviously a different scenario than today. I do think it will be a challenge to ramp that up to the pace of delivery they are aspiring for, but they do have the benefit of a relatively large data set of S/X deliveries to draw upon. Even if the "delivery experience" of a Model 3 is a bit more abbreviated, just the physical space the whole process occupies, the attention to final paperwork processing (which they've hopefully migrated to digital as much as is possible), and a welcoming delivery specialist who can provide the same high level of customer service over and over is not something that will happen on accident. I'm sure they'll figure it out, but there will no doubt be some growing pains.

Panasonic Corp Chief Executive Kazuhiro Tsuga said on Tuesday that output could soon be increased at Tesla Inc’s “gigafactory” battery plant as the causes of production bottlenecks for Tesla’s Model 3 are now understood
Reading is fundamental ... the article you linked clearly says "...that production should increase soon...". In fact, a quote from another article says "This process (for battery packs) will be soon automated, and then the number of vehicles to be produced will rise sharply". Panasonic says Gigafactory battery output to increase for Tesla's Model 3

So the CEO or Panasonic is quoted "in the article" as saying could and the article writer says should?

Really? Do we really want to argue about that?

The second Reuters article indicates Panasonic talking about pack production. I wonder if that is just a misunderstanding/translation problem. I assume Panasonic only makes cells for Tesla. Expertise in pack production would seem to be extremely strategically important to Tesla.

I suppose Panasonic may make pack sub-assemblies and hand that module off to Tesla.

All kinds of stuff to potentially go wrong in the gigafactory compared to Tesla's established way of obtaining cells and building packs for the S/X.

I'm shocked that the "current" problem is not with any of their vendors.

Past articles were pointing to the bottleneck being caused by external vendors.

I really really really really hope that there isn't any intentional bottlenecking going on and that the anti-selling campaign is long over.

I understood Tesla said it was an external party and Panasonic is just that.
Tesla and Panasonic are partners. Tesla’s battery partner Panasonic increases production in Japan for other automakers

Maybe that's why teslas battery partner "Panasonic" made the statement - out of the blue - that they are ramping up their Tesla battery production a few days ago. Panasonic plans to increase battery production at Tesla’s Gigafactory 1 and other plants, says report

I think so too. And partner or not, in a sense Panasonic is a supplier for Tesla so it is not Tesla internally where the bottleneck lies.
