Ordering without FSD=2.5 computers?

If you order the car without FSD, do they stick in the old computer now?

Not that I know of. It wouldn't make sense for them to put deprecated hardware in new cars. You can decide to purchase FSD at any time too, so having HW3 already in the car makes sense.

There are a few reasons for this.

No, everything comes with HW 3.0.

Having HW 3.0 will also help the car send back better data for training the fleet, regardless if you have FSD or not.

Some people that didn't order FSD still got HW 2.5 computers in the 4th quarter last year.

September 2019 model 3 came with HW2.5

Not always, but if there's a shortage of HW3 components, yes. We've seen it periodically.

FWIW Chinese Model 3s without FSD are coming with 2.5 right now due to shortages/virus stuff but they're promising to swap HW3 in for free later.

Not always. There have been a few shortages of the HW3 computer, especially right now in China, so vehicles not equipped with FSD from the factory are NOT guaranteed to have the FSD-capable computer.

Should any of those cars ever be updated later to FSD, their computers will definitely be swapped at no cost, though.

It’s hard to understand why they still have so many 2.5 computers lying around. They were supposed to switch over last April to 3.0. There is something going on that we don’t know about.

It's much better than cash- unlike the entire car, you can put FSD on a credit card and get a bunch back in rewards for the spending.

Are current US cars getting the 2.5HW as well? Has anyone recently taken delivery? I’m expecting a car in 2-4 weeks (I did not purchase FSD upfront).

that’s not cash though.

I can deposit the cash into my account before Taco Bell, gone home and pay via my debit card. It’s the same as cash.
