Just put a deposit down on a CPO P85 looking for delivery second week of May. Is there anyone out there that has taking advantage of the no sales tax incentive or had any issues registering it in NJ and then moving back to your home state?
I do fly up from fl to nj frequently to my parents house which was my former address but they still own it. I have no problem registering in nj at that address and then paying to register it in fl when I head back in a few weeks. I wouldn't think there is a wait to transfer though. Where are you in FLA?AFAIK taxes are collected based on your state of residence, not where the car is purchased. I bought my first tesla in NJ but I owned property there so I took advantage of that fact and registered my car to a NJ address and kept the NJ tags on it until I could transfer the registration to FLA tax free.
Have a FL DL but I can register it at the NJ address of my parents then transfer regist. back to FL.Do you have a NJ license and residence and to register it at?
I spoke with my local dmv in fl and as long as I have the bill of sale, car title, and vehicle to have vin checked they have no problem registering it. I asked my Tesla contact in NJ since they will be doing the paperwork, but they couldn't give me a concrete answer. But I'll give them what they need to register in nj except my fl dl which shouldn't be a problem. Tried calling the dmv in nj and put on forever hold, some things don't change up there! To register a vehicle in NJ you would need to have a NJ Drivers license. If you are willing to temporarily give up your FL license and get a NJ License it might work but would seem like a lot of extra work. The vehicle to get the savings would need to be registered in NJ.
The Man (FL) said:You Might Owe Florida Tax
Many citizens are not aware that Florida has a "use tax." Use tax normally applies to items purchased outside Florida, including another country, that are brought or delivered into the state and would have been taxed if purchased in Florida. The use tax rate for consumers who are not registered dealers is 6%, the same as the general sales tax rate.
...
Is there an exception?
Yes. Items you purchase and use in another state, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia for six months or longer before bringing them into Florida are not subject to use tax. Items you purchase and use in another country do not qualify for this exception. However, a motor vehicle is exempt from Florida use tax when purchased and used in a foreign country six months or longer by an active member of the United States Armed Forces, or his or her spouse.
Well I hope NJ DMV is willing to play because my CPO advisor said it should work out... I'm picking the car up in Paramus, NJ and will be registering it in Alaska where I live... Both states have no sale taxes on Tesla's

If you want to avoid paying the sales tax you will have to wait 6 months and a day to register the car in flaI do fly up from fl to nj frequently to my parents house which was my former address but they still own it. This is not correct you do not need a nj drivers license to register the car thereTo register a vehicle in NJ you would need to have a NJ Drivers license. The issue is Tesla cant just sell you the car without registering it for you. They do all the paperwork for you. If you buy it and they sell it to you in another state you will be liable for paying the tax when you register it in your state. You can only get away without paying the tax if you transfer the registration which means it first needs to be registered in NJ.
No, I want to register the car in AK and drive it back to AK... slowly. It really depends on the state, I've done it in WA and TN, and I know that that is a no go in many states....like CA and MA.You're not registering the car in NJ are you? Are you driving it back to Alaska? Or just registering it there but keeping it in NJ?
FLDL issued confirmed, no problem with out of state...did you have to wait 6 months as well? Thanks to all for the info!!! Still have a lot of time to kill before the certification/inspection is done. Wondered what the timeline is for the DS to contact me initially? If you want to avoid paying the sales tax you will have to wait 6 months and a day to register the car in fla
