Recently I've had an issue with the charging exceeding the the charge level requested. I charge during the night when rates are lower, and typically set the charge level at about 85%. This past week or so, the charging goes beyond the requested 85% to >90%. Not a good thing for battery health. Anyone else notice this issue.

I've noticed it a few times where it goes slightly over the setting but not 5 percent over. It's also fairly easy to set it higher than you think you did so I'd double check that.

I wouldn't worry about charging it to 90 percent once in a while. Is there a reason you charge to 85 percent specifically day to day? Is that how much you need for your commute? If you don't need that much day to day you can always lower it. I keep mine at 70 percent day to day.

I've charged my Model S to 90% every night for the past >4 years, except when I charge to 100% for trips. I've only lost 4% of range in more than 4 years (most of that in the first year as expected). Chill.
Have to agree with this. I normally charge my P85 to 90% (with a small handful of 100% charges before long trips), and have lost only 2 rated miles at 90% charge in over 3 years. I find the new charging UI does make it more difficult to set the charging level accurately, but the difference between charging to 85% and 90% is pretty negligible.

If you are going for "ideal" battery health, then you would set the slider to a point that will cause the average state to fluctuate around 50%. For example, if you use up 20% of your range daily, then you'd set the slider at 60%, drive until you reach 40%, and charge back to 60% again. If you don't drive much, or it's going to sit for a few days, then put the slider at 50%.

But most of the time, you want "practical" battery health. That usually means charging more than 60% full so you have enough range to actually drive somewhere on a moment's notice, and letting the BMS worry about the details.

I am a new owner (one week). Do you charge every night or do you wait until you are at about 50%? Or do you charge to 80% every night? Thank you.

Charging every night is better for the battery and it makes a better habit for you to not forget to plug in, plus the car is available for unexpected trips.

Shallow discharge cycles are better for the battery also - 90% to 80% four times is better than 90% to 50% once.

I plug it in basically every night. Let the battery management system do its thing.

For day to day driving I charge mine to 70 percent. I typically don't go under 40 percent in a normal day though so depending on how much you drive I would adjust it anywhere from 50-90 percent as the set limit charge but plug in each night regardless.

Don’t the delivery specialists explain anything any more? This question gets asked every week.
Answer- plug it in whenever you can and let the battery management system manage the battery. Treat it like your cell phone-- just routinely plug it in overnight every night.

And it would really help to RTFM— even if you’ve never read any car owners manuals before— this car is unlike anything you’ve ever owned.

I know this is an old thread but my Model 3 is now having this same issue of stopping the charge over or under what I set it to. For instance, tonight my battery was at 60% and I set it to charge to 80%, when it was completed it showed the battery was at 84%. This is ridiculous!

Not only is the thread old, this is the Model X forum. But to your question, the charge limit is not particularly precise. Many things can affect when it stops, like if the ambient temperature changes, chances are good the % indicated will change. After a supercharger session, I've actually seen my SOC increase as I am driving away. Go figure. Don't worry about it. Happens all the time and 4% is nothing.

Model X packs don't have much need to be 'calibrated', the SoC indicator usually won't change unexpectedly by more than 1%. Model 3 packs can become increasingly inaccurate if they never sleep and/or stay within a narrow range for a long time. Carefully read all of the first post here

I know this thread is old (as I said in my post) and the Model X forum, but it still applies. All I know is that it used to always charge and stop at the exact percentage I set it to. If I come home in the evening and set it to charge at 90%, I don't want it to finish at 94% and sit like that all night, degrading my battery.

I am set to charge to 75% nightly. My X may end up in the morning anywhere between 73% and 78%. My wife’s 3, also set to a target of 75%, may show up as high as 80%. It seems to happen more, when the weather is very warm.

If you are concerned about not ever going over 90, I would suggest setting a lower target to give you some extra headroom.

I shouldn't have to play a numbers game to get the percentage I set it at. Tesla has said nothing about it doing over or under set charges. And the first summer I had my Model 3 it was hot and it still charged to the correct amount that I set it to charge at. So it seems to me that something else is going on, maybe something in a Tesla OTA update.
