Payment in full before seeing car?

Maybe CAN is different that the US, but there is NO way I would do that. Certainly in my case I didn't have to write the check first. As @hingisfan is suggesting, maybe it's tied to the way you are paying. If it's a method they need to verify, that would be a way for them to remove the lengthy fund verification period before you arrive at the SC.

Do they want payment in full *before* even arriving at the SC, or do they want payment in full before bringing out the car for your inspection?

After reading this, he asks you to "wire" the funds. That's a complete transfer of the funds the second you do that, and you would be completely subject to the transferee (Tesla) for a refund if necessary. I do think Tesla is respectful enough that they would honor their warranty and 7 day return policy so I wouldn't worry there, but boy would I verify that routing number. Twice. The refund process takes many weeks from what I have read if that's an issue for you. However, I also think the probability of refusal has dropped so in all likelihood, you will be fine. Certainly worth the risk if you really want the car.

Just ask you DA if that's absolutely necessary and required for a wire. Tell him you don't feel comfortable wiring the money before inspection and see how he responds. If he says the wire policy is before delivery, see if there are any other options that don't fee you to death which may allow you inspect prior.

If you are having the vehicle delivered to your location, they will not ship it without full payment. Makes sense, as they don't want to trust a 3rd party delivery company to collect and validate proper payment.

Correct - and also make sure you have insurance on the car valid from the payment date. You own the car from that point on so if it gets damaged in transit you want to be sure you have coverage. That's the advice my insurance company gave me.

I was pressured twice at a Chicago Tesla dealer to sign everything before seeing the car as well. After telling them that I needed to see and inspect my potential new car twice, they agreed. My whole experience felt rushed, but I'm still very happy that it worked out, as my TM3 has been a joy to drive!

Just brought a bank draft when I picked up the car, no issues
You did not have it delivered then?
I think the issue is that they want payment before it is delivered. As others have said, they don’t want the 3rd party delivery company picking up a draft or certified cheque.
i was given the option of wiring the funds(not happening) , or emailing them a copy of my certified cheque or bank draft, and then mailing them the check. I will go with this option as it seems to be the only way for them to move the process along.
Thanks for all the replies!

My DA asked me to wire the full amount before the car arrives. Needless to say I am a little hesitant to do this . What have other folks experienced please?

It's the same in the US too in the states where Tesla is not allowed direct sales (Texas is my example). They must have the car paid in full before it even crosses state lines.

I was also a bit hesitant but I knew what to expect, the pictures were pretty clear and I always had the piece of mind that if I refuse delivery, they'd just refund everything (the financed part to the bank and my downpayment to my account).

Everything worked out well in the end and it was so worth it.

To my knowledge that is how it's always been. It was in 2018 at anyrate. If you're financing it, the difference between financed amt and sticker price must be paid. The finance company sends the money to Tesla. Purchaser owes the difference.

Tesla likes to get financing done prior to preping the cars for delivery.

They could do the wire transfer at the instant of delivery, but that takes time and if something goes amiss, then everything gets delayed until everything clears. Hard to do after hours or on weekends.

They are also taking a chance of accepting a bank check on delivery. They are easiy to counterfit with a good inkjet or Laser Printer. Private parties get duped all the time, accepting a bank draft as payment, which they later find out is fraudulent.

Understandable that buyers would not want to finalize payment until they get a chance to inspect their cars. Some want to spend over an hour, with a checklist, and only will accept a perfect car.

Tesla, of course, wants to have cash in hand prior to handing over the car.

Kind of a chicken and egg thing that needs to be ironed out with your delivery specialist.

Interesting as well that they will not accept cash for deliveries as well. Drug smugglers cannot pay with a briefcase of $$$ :)

My first car was more liberal. They accepted a personal check for the due amount without question. Guess they got burned a few times, perhaps with some putiing stop-payments after getting their cars home.

Heres where I have an issue with that. Go buy a <you name it> and insist on spending an hour with a checklist. The sales guy will walk away. Insisting on that is pure arrogance and only serves the buyers frail ego.

I couldn't disagree more with this. With Tesla we all know they can come with a bunch of issues, either when buying used or new. I cannot understand how could anyone buy one without a one hour checklist.

It's exactly what I did when I picked up mine and the guy presenting the car was more than patient and let me check absolutely everything I had on my list. I had the full payment done in advance but had I found anything serious, I could have just rejected delivery and Tesla would issue a full refund (maybe without the $100 fee)
