Canary Media: Bill Gates' nuclear startup wins $750M, loses sole fuel source.

One big new problem for TerraPower emerged earlier this year: its fuel source. The only facility currently able to supply commercial quantities of HALEU is in Russia. That wasn’t a great situation even before Russia invaded Ukraine. Now that the war in Ukraine has been grinding on for six months and shows no signs of resolution, relying on fuel sourced from Russia is untenable.

I have no skin in the game, but another option would be to down-blend existing HEU stockpiles in the US:

...With Russian HALEU now off the table, the only way to produce HALEU fast enough to meet the ARDP schedules is downblending highly-enriched uranium (HEU) into HALEU, as a one-time measure, to fuel the first cores for the ARDP reactors...as of September 30, 2013, the total US HEU inventory was 585.6 metric tons, with 499.4 metric tons “for national security or non-national security programs including nuclear weapons, naval propulsion, nuclear energy, and science.” Of the remaining 86.2 metric tons, the federal government noted that “41.6 metric tons was available for potential down-blend to low enriched uranium.”
...1 metric ton of HEU will produce approximately 4-5 metric tons of HALEU through downblending.
...downblending HEU would also entail a modest investment—between $150 to $200 million over the next few years to expand downblending capacity

Why Downblending HEU is Vital to Keep US Advanced Nuclear on Target – Third Way

To keep Diablo Canyon alive, or to not keep Diablo Canyon alive: Not long after the Newsom administration unveiled draft legislation to give PG&E a forgivable loan of as much as $1.4 billion to extend the life of California’s last nuclear power plant past its planned 2025 closure — a move it said would help stabilize the state’s fragile power grid — some Democratic lawmakers have countered with a proposal that doesn’t involve keeping Diablo Canyon running. Instead, the lawmakers want to funnel the $1.4 billion into accelerating clean energy projects; installing energy-efficient appliances, including solar panels and storage, in low-income Californians’ homes; and subsidizing electric bills, the Associated Press reports

That kind of legal boost is useful after June’s ruling in West Virginia v. EPA, the Supreme Court climate battle that curtailed the agency’s ability to broadly regulate power plant carbon emissions. Justices based their ruling on the major questions doctrine, which requires that Congress must explicitly grant agencies authority to act on far-reaching economic and political issues. By opening up the Clean Air Act and reinforcing that legislative language, the climate law helps insulate the agency from similar legal battles in the future. The law reaffirms the agency’s mandate to regulate greenhouse gases in an added section 135 of the Clean Air Act, which carves out $87 million “to ensure that reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are achieved through use of existing authorities.”

The law largely provides incentives for companies looking to stem their excess methane, but its language clearly signals from Congress that methane prevention should be a regulatory priority, which helps insulate future methane regulation from major questions challenges. The agency is currently in the process of releasing methane rules for the oil and gas sector, under the authority of Section 111 of the Clean Air Act, which covers emission regulation for stationary facility sources. “This provision does say clearly from Congress that they expect a good, strong 111 rule on oil and gas from the EPA,” according to Earthjustice attorney Hana Vizcarra. “It’s definitely a directive, it’s an expectation that they’re going to finalize that rule and that it’s going to be meaningful.”

UK and US banks among biggest backers of Russian ‘carbon bombs’, data shows

Putin’s war is funded through money from fossil fuels and these fossil fuels are causing climate breakdown as we speak,” said Svitlana Romanko, director of the Ukrainian NGO Razom We Stand, which is calling for an immediate end to all foreign investment in Russian fossil fuel companies and a permanent embargo on Russian oil, gas and coal. “Investing in Russian carbon bombs is the worst thing you can do today.”

Financial institutions in the US hold almost half the foreign investment in Russian carbon bomb companies, with 154 institutions holding $23.6bn. The largest combination of investment and credit – $10bn – was provided by JPMorgan Chase, which other analyses have also identified as a leading funder of fossil fuels.

No. If you don't know why it was turned off in the first place, then you should google for "san onofre faulty mitsubishi steam generator". It's not about nuclear waste being radioactive.

Edit: Oh, were you being sarcastic?
I was obviously being sarcastic. However currently nuclear power is our cleanest bet, san onofre was replaced by 2 natural gas plants more or less. With the push for EV our state and others cant support the current much less more electric power needs. California, via Cpuc trying to push Nem 3, trying to screw solar. We need cheaper solar and storage

Thing can change very quick once the Wallbox V2G is is released - as in maybe storage is not an issue.

California to approve plan to ban sales of gas-powered cars by 2035

2021, only 12% of new cars sold in California were zero-emission, according to Carb. The new rule would require the state reach 35% of sales by 2026, 68% by 2030 and 100% by 2035. It would not affect cars that are already on the road.

More than half of California’s carbon pollution comes from the transportation sector, Newsom pointed out when announcing his executive order in 2020. The governor has hailed the plan as a crucial step to address the climate emergency, which has fueled costly and destructive natural disasters in the state.

How about planes, private planes, trains etc

Trains should be next. It's absolutely insane that they aren't already grid powered most of the time. They're already electric, they just use an onboard diesel generator.

Progress is progress but 2035 should be the last year you can REGISTER ICE. ~2025 should be the last year you can buy new...
