Quality of new MY's - is it better now?

Just placed an order yesterday 7/17/20. The Tesla Specialist told me the wait is about 1 month. Kind of been hearing issues with fitment/quality. For new owners, who received their cars recently, any issues?

Depends on trim and color. Seems the same issues are across the board as it was at the beginning. Some people say they got a perfect car, but refuse to upload the pictures :)

My MY (white awd) was not super bad - doors, hatch, lights, roof glass, charging port misalignments. I did not like that, but some may say it is fine and can be fixed after. I returned mine.

The tip from me - do not give them your money till you accept the delivery AFTER you check your car. Otherwise - it will become YOUR problem. I did this mistake (took a BoA loan and did not have control when money is paid), unfortunately. Now, who knows when they will refund me.

When did you take delivery?

such a shame that paint, trim and fitment is a black eye to Tesla's other wise over achieving record. I tell everyone objectively that everything else is is better than the competition and I'm willing to accept post purchase rework but it's not for everyone at this stage.
Especially in other countries (Canada) were the currency exchange makes Tesla's $$$ and you get a car with worse paint/trim/and fitment issues than a GM. (note: I had 2017 Volt)

I took a look at all the Model Ys in the Portland OR delivery center (around 20 of them) and compared it to the MY PUP (Red) that I was pre-inspecting. There were definitely some cars that had panel gap issues, but it seems like overall there was not much of a difference between them all. I decided to move forward with delivery, as there is no guarantee that things will get better or that the next batch is going to be different. I also expect CA to shut down again, and with the coming flu season there may not be any new cars produced for a long time (winter is going to be devastating).

I'm ok with reworks after the purchase if they actually CAN and WILL the stated issues (e.g. gap, paint, etc)?

My placed order 7/17/20 is Performance TMY (midnight metallic silver+white interior). I might check with a Tesla Specialist today to see if he/she can provide an estimated delivery time frame based on my specs.

Depends. Some they may fix, most they will say are in spec. Like I mentioned - it was not so bad, but bad enough for me. Your acceptance level for 60K car may be different, and that is perfectly fine. None of the issues I had would prevent me from driving - they all were cosmetic.

The question is - if they put so little attention to cosmetic QC, does this mean they do the same for other components - we just do not see the issues as they are hidden inside? Safety, drive unit, etc? I hope not ...

Let's hope not when it comes to safety and driving. What attracts me is the technology and performance. I can live with the cosmetic imperfection. But you have a good point, and we won't know until later... But it is an amazing machine nonetheless.

I just took delivery 120 miles from home. I'm a motorhead and thoroughly went over the Y before accepting. After reading up on QC issues I was quite surprised at how good it was. Only things I could find were a very small piece of extra material on the overhead, Some small glue spots on rear fender, Vin label in wrong spot and a minor misalignment on the charging door. I walked around the Tesla lot and looked at other Model Ys and 3s and found a mix of perfectly aligned charging doors and some that were a bit off (like mine)--about 50-50. I fixed most while waiting and asked about having the charge door adjusted as the way it's attached doesn't lend itself to realigning easily. Was told it's within spec and a common issue and that they won't adjust it. Told me my only option was to reject the car entirely and drive my trade back home. Take it or leave it attitude. That kind of customer service attitude concerns me, so much so that I almost rejected the car, and not for the door. I did accept the car.
Overall, the car is nearly perfect and we're happy with it. Apparently the factory QC is improving.

If it makes you feel better. If the charge door misalignment is the only thing wrong on my MY on delivery day I would take it home too.

Good luck with the specialist
They don't know but will ask like it.
You ordered white interior performance like I did.
The key will be is Tesla still pushing out white interior.
Tesla was as far as I know so hopefully it'll be soon
Remember though they do say 4 to 8 weeks

Nice attitude for a company rep, could you imagine if someone at a regular car dealership said that as you were picking up your $60K car?

I cannot believe how obviously bad the panel gaps are on Y's. The fact that Tesla lets them leave like that is pretty lame.
Tesla has zero competition. Don't tell me a Hyundai front wheel drive slow poke EV is competition. NO Competition. Maybe for made in China just for China but not globally. Folks waiting in queue for your product. 90% of Tesla product is great. Until demand slows Elon doesn't give a rats arse as long as your buying and driving paint/finish quality/trim and panel alignment is not a priority. Weep and moan on forums all you want. I an certainly am guilty of not discouraging them from this business practice. I took a defective M3 home with a litany of due bill issues all resolved now. Put in an order for a Y. LOL Self flagellating disciple of Tesla

I have some paint issues with the Y I picked up last Wednesday, including a nasty spot near the window. They scheduled a metting in a week to go over everything (mainly paint issues).

A lot of the other issues people were having seem to be fixed (seats misaligned, etc). The rear hatch could be aligned a bit better, but I see worse on other vehicles I've compared to, so not sure if they will do anything to make that part 'perfect''.

I received my car in a rushed delivery and had around 10-11 issues. But half of those issues were addressed in first service center appointment and they ordered the parts for the other half for another appointment when the parts arrive. There is indeed a small dent in the door maybe around 1mm scratch on paint. I was thinking they either paint the door or offer a rebate etc. But they have ordered a new door to change the whole door panel.
List of issues I had:
  1. Dirty seat belt pillar (fixed)
  2. Dirty Sun Visor (fixed)
  3. Rattling Trunk (Fixed)
  4. Rattling Seatbelt mechanism (Fixed)
  5. A bubble in the mirror (Replaced)
  6. Dent on the door (New door ordered)
  7. Scratch on the carbon window trim (Part ordered)
  8. Condensation on rear light (Light ordered)
  9. Coat hanger does not seat back in place (part ordered)
  10. Broken leather trim on the driver side door (part ordered)
  11. Stiff Ride (its the car design)
It was a headache, but I had a good experience because they were transparent and they did not push back. Accepted all issues and added couple of issues after 24 hours window that they initially offered.

I went to pick mine up my new Model Y, Red with White interior on Thursday in Cleveland, OH. I rejected the car based on: headliner issues, stains on the white dashboard, scuffing on the trim around wheel wells, doors and fenders didn't align, very noticeable because of the design. Completely unacceptable for a $57k car in my opinion and I wanted to send a message. Apparently this is better than they have been coming in but still totally unacceptable. At least have the doors and fenders matching up and the inside clean. Not too difficult if you ask me. Staining on my brand new white dash?! But again it was in much better condition than the charging doors that wouldn't open, hatches that wouldn't latch, uneven rear seats.

Still my Model 3 is a much better build quality than this (while very far from perfect) and I expect the same or better out of a Model Y that costs more money!
