Quality still hit or miss

I picked up a ‘21 MY standard range yesterday. Quality wasn’t much different than the MY I picked up for a friend when it was first released...

- wavy paint on front bumper
- obvious tear/rip/gouge on rear seat
- rear cargo shelf missing
- significant wheel shimmy/imbalance at 70mph

I personally don’t care about panel gaps unless they’re atrocious (like the early MX). This one was ok.

I know Tesla will take care of it, but it’s quite embarrassing they’d release this to a customer.

This was technically inventory with 5 miles. May have even been a reject. It has the heated steering wheel. It doesn’t have the new headlight design.

This is the 4th Tesla we’ve owned... probably the 7th or 8th I’ve picked up with family/friends.

@Wreckz @voltaren no, the Model Y does not come with a cargo/parcel shelf.

EDIT: check out this thread for an excellent 3rd party solution: Trunk Shelf + Rear Sound Dampening

Sorry, I’d call that a cargo cover but I see the confusion. My car literally didn’t have a cargo shelf for the floor. The two pieces that cover the inset wells were missing.

I also brought it to the delivery specialists attention and he said schedule an appt.

I also picked up a model Y yesterday in Scottsdale Arizona. I was pretty upset with the quality and that they released it for delivery. plastic wheel trim wasn’t attached (could fit a finger between body of car and wheel cover), rear number was damaged, front skirt was hanging down about 1/2 lower on one side, and there was a black greasy handprint on the white leather seats

Yeah, unacceptable. Good thing is that all of this can be fixed. It’s just inconsiderate to the customer. I’m used to it as I’ve clearly been a glutton for punishment.

On a positive note, I will acknowledge that the MY makes the pre-2021 MS and MX feel old. The build quality, in general, is much better. Feels like a more solid car.

@voltaren ah, got it. Sorry for the confusion. Weird, I don't recall seeing anyone else mention receiving a MY without the cargo area floor ("false floor"?).

PS time to update your signature :) [unless of course the MY SR isn't for yourself]

Since I know everything about Tesla Model Y production (HAHA! I joined here Oct. 28 2020) I'd say that QC is mostly HIT since late December. A ton of MISS since production started.
Check out the 2/2/21 YouTube, Musk with Sandy Munro. Elon spends some energy nervously explaining about how tough it is to ramp up production. He's right, of course, but it doesn't excuse Tesla from sending out cars that they knew weren't worthy of a $50k price tag.

Oct 2020 MY PUP
  • Front fender paint chip repaired with touch up before delivery
  • Rear Door Alignment - 2 attempts to correct so far
  • Drivers Door would not close
  • Frunk would not close - 2 attempts to correct
  • Window opening during car wash
  • Rear spoiler coming off
  • Alignment off on left side by 2.5 front and rear - 2 attempts to correct
  • Trim over rear window discoloration
This is much better than 2017 Model Xs that had the parking sensors fail / ghosting on drive home, then multiple MCU replacements that required towing, and falcon wing door sensors that randomly worked, and front doors that failed to open at all. Tesla gave extended warranties on the two Model Xs we had even though they were leases o_Obecause of the issues.

I’m waiting for the second MY PUP scheduled for March. We’ll see if it’s an improvement.
