Road Noise

My year old Model 3 road noise is great below say 50 mph, not to bad between 50-70 but over 70 mph I feel compelled to not use the vehicle speakers to listen to audio books and instead use my AirPods. The road noise seems way to high.. I would like to see Tesla offer a quiet car package option for the model 3. I would be willing to purchase a package like this. Makes me wonder if something like this is possible.

questions Where do you think the noise comes from? The wife drove a model 3 and said she didn't want it for long trips because of noise.... mainly wind but also road. Other folks seem to think there is no problem with noise so it leaves me puzzled as to where. Yup, I know some roads are a lot quieter than others, so I am assuming you test drive it on the same roads as other cars you compare with ?

I 2nd the query, on where you think the sound is coming from, wind, or tires. Year-old tires, could be quite low on tread, and may be increasing the noise. Also, try to drive someone else's Model 3 to help isolate the issue, could be the specific combination of tires and road composition. Some road surfaces are noisier than others. Last, try to go to a Tesla Store or service center and see if you can do a test drive to compare.

These are very good suggestions. I live about in Bellingham, WA about 75 miles from Seattle and Bellevue Tesla and traffic being what it is, I hope to not visit Tesla anytime soon.

I wonder if all this noise is just the result of many "unfortunate" factors meeting in the 3: very stiff body, lack of proper sound proofing, cheap-ish suspension and maybe even not good enough aerodynamics testing when designing it.

My M3 is 6 months old, 3300 miles, and road noise at speeds over 50 is really intrusive. Seems to be coming from the back, but I cannot isolate it.

We need Bose to make a sound cancelling device for the car!

Can you tell if it's road noise or wind noise? Could it be from too little sound proofing of the rear wheel wells?

I haven't driven the 3 yet (started with an S - hope I didn't ruin myself :) ) but I hope all this noise can be addressed with some added sound proofing. I really hope it's not wind noise only from the shape of the car. I know this can make a huge difference, for example, my wife's Beetle (not particularly the most aerodynamic car) interior is whisper quiet up to about 60mph but above 70mph it get way louder than other cars I've had.

My car is an early build and these cars did not have the sound deadener in the parcel shelf bass port or the laminated windshield that the current cars do. I must have gotten the flufferbot though because I don’t have the oil can noise, so a win there!

Some moron kicked up a huge rock into my windshield last weekend and it cracked the glass all the way across so I guess I’ll get to find out firsthand what difference the current windshield makes, it any. Replacement ($1200!) scheduled for tomorrow morning.

I did the door seal kit and it makes an improvement but it’s moderate. When my (19”) tires wear out I intend to replace the Continentals with the new Bridgestone QuietTrack which is ostensibly designed specifically for EVs. TURANZA QUIETTRACK

Lastly I’ve found that the factory sun shade accessory reduces noise reflection off the roof glass.

Here is a video of the sound levels in my Performance Model 3 after I installed additional door seals and added seals to the trunk lid.

I am averaging about 71 dBA at 72 mph on the freeway.

I also have a 2017 Model 3 long range and it is not as quiet as the Model 3 Performance with the same seals installation and that could be due to the tire and suspension difference.

Here are the parts that I used:

I was following some youtube video for the door seals using the first two parts in the list. But I accidentally ordered the third part and I found I could use that to make better noise reduction than just the door seals along. The total cost should be around $30 per car ($60 for 2 cars). Below is rough drawings of the location and length of seals for the installation.

How did/were you planning to use the 3rd item? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H89G7D1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I couldn't follow from your diagram :(
