I did a quick scan & a few tidbits were interesting to me (understanding 10-Q's are filled with potential risks)
.. the Gigafactory could exceed our current expectations...

So what is Tesla's expectations for final Gigafactory cost? Seems they have spent $200M on it so far. I think last year Elon said $5B or something like that, with Tesla's share being $2B. If it is still $5B expected costs, then there is still a lot to invest.

The other thing is the inventory. It seems to be growing each quarter by a few hundred million.

Pretty sure that was predicted in the previous quarters filings (maybe even the last two quarters.) I'll probably butcher the quote but rough paraphrase was along the lines of "...in order to achieve scalability while increasing production, we expect inventory to increase significantly...yada yada yada."

Here is the section pertaining to finished goods...

Inventory
As of June 30, 2015 and December 31, 2014, our inventory consisted of the following (in thousands):

June 30,

December 31,

2015

2014

Raw materials
$
395,171

$
392,292

Work in process

99,116

56,114

Finished goods

597,329

397,318

Service parts

120,663

107,951

Total
$
1,212,279

$
953,675

12

Finished goods inventory includes vehicles in transit to fulfill customer orders, new vehicles available for immediate sale at our retail and service center locations , and pre-owned Tesla vehicles . The increase in finished goods inventory was primarily due to customer orders that were in transit for delivery at quarter-end while there was a reduction in the new vehicles available for immediate sale.

EPA range rating for Model S 90D/P90D in (left to right: miles for City/Highway/Combined):
2015-08-08-ModelS90D-EPA-RangeRatings.jpg

(link: InsideEVs)
According to the EPA, there is no range advantage for the 90kWh option. However, as we’ve seen before with the Chevrolet Volt, it’s likely that Tesla didn’t submit the 90D or P90D for EPA testing, thus it’s stuck with same exact official figures as the 85 kWh version.
But Tesla does state time and again that the 90 kWh battery gets you approximately 6% more range, so figure a combined range of 286 miles for the 90D and 268 miles for the P90D.

Looks like they do not mention a range increase for the range upgrade.
Is this due to their testing procedures?

I can see a small bump upwards occurring once Tesla makes the Model X design studio public (3 weeks from now?), and a larger bump once Model X deliveries begin (6 weeks from now?)...
And a third bump when people realize how good an SUV the MX is. Two shortcomings of every other SUV on the market are high center of gravity and lousy mileage, exacerbated by inefficient 4WD. The MX AWD is more efficient and effective.

And a fourth bump if/when they ramp production to 1700-2000 per week for at least the last month of either Q4-2015 or Q1-2016.

One of the most interesting things that Elon mentioned last week, that hasn't been pointed out, is he now views long term as 3-5 years, for additional factories. It takes 1-2 years to build a factory. Permits, investment capital, and state/federal government support would become known before that. Wouldn't this mean we should hear more about the additional factories within the next 12 months?

In a bit of random, satyrical news.

Realized the Twitter account is fake about 10 seconds after posting that

Random idea for all celebrity Model S owners who read this:

Organize a thing where you sell the $1000 bonus from using the referral code and include a meet and greet or a guest spot on a TV show for free, and donate the $1000 to a charity.

Or, auction off a meet and greet, speaking engagement, appearance, or guest spot + a Model S with the bidding starting at the price of a Model S minus the $1000 referral bonus, with all proceeds, including the $1000 referral bonus going to charity. Heck, maybe even include some extra items that make sense for this type of thing.

Piggybacking on your thought. The other group of model S owners: professional athletes have a very captive, well to do, group of 'referrals' in their locker rooms. They could get to '10' in 10 minutes.

If this is 100% accurate, it will be very interesting.

China looks to copy California’s electric vehicle incentives : Renew Economy

In addition to a proposed new policy almost identical to California's electric vehicle mandate and incentives,

"A separate scheme directed at consumers also provides potential buyers with direct monetary incentives for selecting more-energy-efficient vehicles. Under the scheme,
drivers will receive points that are cash redeemable for every mile covered in a fully electric vehicle. Conversely, drivers will have to pay a premium for distances covered using conventional gasoline cars."

----------------------------------

BTW: The stupid article written by Reuters sounds like it was paid for by GM. The authors basically criticize Tesla for using incentives that exist for all automobile manufacturers.

Then the "writers" applaud GM for going bankrupt, and producing more vehicles than Tesla? Also, they completely ignore the fact that GM received billions of dollars from the US government, that will never be paid back. Not to mention the $6 billion Ford received from the DOE, that has not been paid back . Amazing.

I guess people forget when GM was caught paying employees at its federally funded Chevy Volt battery plant to play video games?
